Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)
Navigating Holiday Travel and Growth in 2024
Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is experiencing a holiday season like no other. As one of the fastest-growing airports in the Southeast, RDU has risen to the challenge of accommodating a surge in travelers eager to reconnect with loved ones during the festive season. The airport has become a critical gateway for the Triangle region, showcasing its adaptability and community impact during this busy period.
This year, RDU expects to welcome over 700,000 passengers during the peak holiday season, an increase of nearly 15% compared to last year. With airlines adding more direct flights to popular destinations, including New York City, Chicago, and Orlando, the airport has solidified its role as a major transportation hub. The growth is fueled by the region’s booming population and a recovering travel industry.
To manage the influx, RDU has implemented a series of measures aimed at streamlining the passenger experience. Extended security checkpoint hours, additional TSA staffing, and the deployment of automated screening lanes have significantly reduced wait times. Travelers are also encouraged to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours for international trips to ensure a smooth journey.
RDU’s recent growth is underpinned by a $650 million expansion plan launched earlier this year. The plan includes a terminal modernization project, the addition of new gates, and the construction of a consolidated rental car facility. These enhancements aim to accommodate the projected 20 million annual passengers by 2030.
A key highlight of the expansion is the ongoing development of Terminal 2. This state-of-the-art facility will feature advanced amenities such as smart parking systems, enhanced dining options showcasing local cuisine, and expanded lounge spaces. The airport is also prioritizing sustainability by incorporating energy-efficient technologies and exploring renewable energy sources.
The local growth is more than just a boon for travelers—it’s a significant economic driver for the region. The airport supports over 20,000 jobs and contributes nearly $13 billion annually to the local economy. Increased connectivity to domestic and international destinations strengthens the Triangle’s appeal as a hub for business, education, and tourism.
The holiday season highlights the sense of community that RDU fosters. From partnering with local artists to display festive decor and live music performances in the terminals to offering travel assistance programs for passengers with special needs, the airport goes above and beyond to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Tips for Travelers
For those flying through RDU this holiday season, a few tips can ensure a stress-free experience:
Plan Ahead: Book parking in advance through RDU’s website to secure a spot and save time.
Pack Smart: Familiarize yourself with TSA guidelines to avoid delays at security checkpoints.
Stay Informed: Use the RDU mobile app for real-time flight updates, gate information, and terminal maps.
As RDU continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to meeting the needs of its passengers while supporting the Triangle’s vibrant community. This holiday season serves as a testament to the airport’s resilience and forward-thinking approach, ensuring that it remains a cornerstone of regional progress.
With a blend of innovation and community focus, RDU is not just an airport—it’s a symbol of the region’s dynamic growth and a bridge connecting families and businesses during the most wonderful time of the year.

Health Officials Issue New Warnings About Common Household Chemicals
As part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness about environmental and health hazards, health officials are issuing updated warnings about the potential dangers of everyday household chemicals. Many of these substances, found in cleaning products, air fresheners, and even personal care items, may pose risks to human health and the environment if not handled properly.
Household chemicals often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, and other substances that can affect indoor air quality and potentially harm the respiratory system. Long-term exposure to certain chemicals has been linked to chronic health conditions, including asthma, hormonal disruptions, and even cancer.
"We’re not asking people to panic," said Dr. Emily Hart, a toxicologist with the National Institute for Environmental Safety. "However, it’s important to be informed and take precautions to minimize unnecessary exposure."
Key Chemicals of Concern
Ammonia and Bleach: Found in many household cleaners, these can cause skin irritation and respiratory issues, particularly when mixed together, creating toxic chloramine gas.
Formaldehyde: Present in air fresheners, furniture, and some adhesives, this chemical is a known carcinogen.
Phthalates: Commonly used in fragranced products such as air fresheners, detergents, and shampoos, these have been linked to hormonal imbalances and reproductive health issues.
Triclosan: An antibacterial agent found in soaps and toothpaste, which may contribute to antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption.
Perchloroethylene (PERC): Used in dry-cleaning solutions and some carpet cleaners, PERC is classified as a possible human carcinogen.
To reduce exposure to harmful chemicals, experts recommend the following:
Read Labels: Look for products labeled "non-toxic," "biodegradable," or "free of synthetic fragrances."
Improve Ventilation: Use fans or open windows when using cleaning products to disperse VOCs.
Switch to Natural Alternatives: Vinegar, baking soda, and lemon are effective and safer options for many cleaning tasks.
Store Chemicals Safely: Keep all products in their original containers and out of reach of children and pets.
Dispose Responsibly: Never pour hazardous chemicals down the drain or throw them in regular trash; follow local disposal guidelines.
Public health agencies are urging manufacturers to improve transparency by listing all ingredients on product labels. Meanwhile, consumers are encouraged to research the products they bring into their homes.
"It’s about making informed decisions," Dr. Hart emphasized. "By reducing exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, families can take a proactive approach to safeguarding their health."
While household chemicals are convenient and effective, their potential risks should not be overlooked. Awareness and thoughtful choices can go a long way in creating a healthier and safer living environment. For more information, consult resources from environmental health organizations or speak with a local health professional.

This week’s recipe is from Grandma’s kitchen.
Stuffed Jalapeno Peppers
Ingredients
12 large jalapeño peppers
8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
2 green onions, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 slices cooked bacon, crumbled (optional)
1/2 tsp smoked paprika or chili powder
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
Olive oil spray (if using breadcrumbs)
Instructions
Prepare the Jalapeños
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Slice each jalapeño in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and membranes (use gloves to protect your hands).
Make the Filling
In a mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, shredded cheese, green onions, garlic, bacon (if using), smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Stuff the Peppers
Spoon the cheese mixture into each jalapeño half, filling them generously.
Optional Topping
If desired, sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the stuffed peppers and lightly spray with olive oil for a crispy topping.
Bake the Peppers
Arrange the stuffed peppers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil.
Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the cheese is bubbly.
Serve and Enjoy
Let the peppers cool slightly before serving. They make a fantastic appetizer or snack!
Tips:
For extra spice, leave some seeds in the peppers or mix chopped jalapeños into the filling.
Use alternative fillings like cooked sausage, ground turkey, or black beans for variety.
These can also be cooked on the grill for a smoky flavor!
Enjoy your spicy, cheesy treat! 🌶️🧀
