Visitor Restrictions Implemented at Triangle Hospitals

In response to a surge in respiratory illnesses across the Triangle region, several major hospitals are implementing stricter visitation policies to protect patients, staff, and the community. These restrictions affect all Duke University Health System hospitals and surgery centers, as well as all UNC hospitals and UNC Health Rex facilities.

The Triangle area has recently seen an increase in cases of respiratory illnesses, including RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), influenza, and COVID-19. These viruses are especially concerning for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Hospitals are taking proactive measures to reduce the risk of transmission within their facilities.

The new visitation policies apply to:

  • Duke University Health System: This includes all Duke hospitals, surgery centers, and affiliated outpatient facilities.

  • UNC Health System: All UNC hospitals and UNC Health Rex locations are also affected by these restrictions.

The following visitation guidelines have been put into place:

  • Limited Visitors: Only immediate family members or designated caregivers are allowed to visit patients.

  • Age Restrictions: Visitors under the age of 12 are generally not permitted to enter patient care areas unless under special circumstances.

  • Health Screening: All visitors must pass a health screening upon entry, including temperature checks and a questionnaire about recent symptoms or exposure.

  • Masks Required: Masks must be worn at all times within hospital facilities, regardless of vaccination status.

While these measures may be challenging for patients and their loved ones, hospital officials emphasize that the restrictions are essential to prevent further outbreaks of respiratory illnesses. “The health and safety of our patients and staff are our top priorities,” said a spokesperson for Duke Health. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but these steps are necessary to protect everyone.”

Hospitals are encouraging families to explore alternative ways to stay connected with their loved ones during this time. Options include:

  • Virtual Visits: Using video calling platforms to communicate with patients.

  • Phone Calls and Messages: Sending messages or making phone calls to stay in touch.

  • Drop-Off Services: Delivering care packages or personal items through designated drop-off locations at hospital facilities.

To reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses in the broader community, health officials are urging residents to:

  • Get vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19.

  • Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water.

  • Wear masks in crowded or high-risk settings.

  • Stay home if experiencing symptoms of illness.

The rise in respiratory illnesses serves as a reminder of the importance of collective efforts to safeguard public health. By adhering to these new visitation policies and following preventive measures, the Triangle community can help mitigate the impact of these illnesses during this challenging time. For the latest updates, patients and visitors are encouraged to check hospital websites or contact facilities directly.

2025 Housing Market In Wake County

In December 2023, Wake Forest reported a median listing home price of $560,000, reflecting a 2.7% year-over-year increase. The median price per square foot stood at $213, with homes typically selling for around $470,000.

Looking ahead, the broader Triangle region, which includes Wake Forest, is expected to experience moderate price growth in 2025. This suggests a shift towards market stability, offering potential buyers relief from the rapid price escalations observed in previous years.

Recent actions by the Federal Reserve have influenced borrowing costs. In November 2024, the Fed implemented a quarter-point interest rate cut, following a half-point reduction in September. Despite these cuts, mortgage rates have remained relatively high, with 30-year fixed rates hovering between 6% and 7% for much of the year.

Projections for 2025 indicate that mortgage rates may decrease slightly but are expected to remain above 6%. Wells Fargo forecasts rates around 6.3% by year-end, while Fannie Mae anticipates rates staying above 6%.

The combination of moderate home price growth and persistently high mortgage rates suggests a more balanced housing market in Wake County for the first quarter of 2025. Increased housing inventory and a stabilization of prices may provide buyers with more options and less competition compared to previous years.

However, the elevated interest rates could continue to impact affordability, potentially influencing buyer demand and overall market activity. Currently, the principal and interest payment on a 30-year loan of $450,000 at an interest rate of 6.5% would be approximately $2,844.31 per month

As 2025 unfolds, stakeholders in the local housing market should monitor interest rate trends and regional economic developments. While the market appears to be stabilizing, the interplay between mortgage rates and housing prices will play a crucial role in shaping real estate dynamics in the coming months.

This Week’s Health Tip

Brain Health

Your brain is the command center of your body, managing thoughts, emotions, movements, and vital functions. Just like the rest of your body, your brain requires proper care to function at its best. In a world of constant mental stimulation, maintaining good brain health is more important than ever. Here are some practical steps and scientific insights to enhance and preserve your cognitive abilities.

The food you eat significantly impacts your brain's health. A diet rich in nutrients supports cognitive function and helps prevent neurological decline. Key dietary recommendations include:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fish like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, omega-3s are essential for brain cell structure and communication.

  • Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Berries, dark chocolate, and green tea help combat oxidative stress, reducing the risk of age-related cognitive decline.

  • Whole Grains: These provide steady energy and help maintain focus throughout the day.

  • Leafy Greens: Vegetables like spinach and kale are packed with brain-friendly nutrients like vitamin K, lutein, and beta carotene.

Exercise benefits not just your body but your brain as well. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, promoting the growth of new neurons and improving memory and learning. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly, supplemented by strength training and balance exercises.

Keeping your mind active is essential for maintaining sharp cognitive skills. Activities such as reading, puzzles, learning a new skill, or playing musical instruments stimulate brain connections and even build new neural pathways.

Sleep is crucial for brain health, as it allows your brain to rest, repair, and consolidate memories. Adults should aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep per night. To improve sleep hygiene:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.

  • Avoid screens an hour before bedtime.

  • Create a dark, quiet, and comfortable sleeping environment.

Chronic stress can harm your brain by increasing the production of cortisol, which can impair memory and reduce brain volume over time. Techniques like mindfulness meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and spending time in nature can help reduce stress levels.

Strong social ties and meaningful relationships contribute to mental well-being and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Engaging in regular conversations, participating in group activities, and staying connected with loved ones can significantly enhance brain health.

Certain habits can have a detrimental effect on brain health. These include:

  • Smoking: Damages blood vessels and increases the risk of stroke and dementia.

  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Can impair memory and cognitive functions.

  • A Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity negatively affects overall brain function.

Dehydration can impair focus, memory, and overall cognitive performance. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excessive caffeine or sugary drinks.

Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity can harm brain health if left untreated. Regular checkups with your healthcare provider help ensure early detection and management of these risks.

Good brain health is a lifelong commitment that involves a combination of proper nutrition, physical activity, mental stimulation, and healthy habits. By making these strategies part of your daily routine, you can optimize your cognitive abilities, enhance your quality of life, and safeguard your brain for years to come. Start today—your brain will thank you!
