Christmas Tree Recycling
As the holiday season wraps up, many Wake County residents wonder what to do with their live Christmas trees. Thankfully, the county offers convenient and eco-friendly options for recycling these festive staples. Recycling your tree helps the environment and contributes to valuable community projects.
Wake County accepts live Christmas trees for recycling at designated yard waste centers and through curbside pickup in many municipalities. To ensure your tree is eligible for recycling:
Remove all decorations: This includes ornaments, tinsel, lights, and tree stands.
No artificial trees: Only live, natural trees are accepted.
Avoid flocked trees: Trees with artificial snow cannot be recycled.
Many local municipalities, such as Raleigh, Cary, and Apex, offer curbside tree collection as part of their yard waste services. Check your city’s schedule for specific dates, as pickups typically occur in early January. Place your tree at the curb on the designated day, following size restrictions and preparation guidelines.
For those outside city limits or preferring to drop off their trees, Wake County operates multiple yard waste facilities, including:
Wake County Convenience Centers
North Wake Landfill District Park
Sims Recycling Facility
These centers often mulch the trees, turning them into wood chips or compost for landscaping and park maintenance.
Recycling Christmas trees helps reduce landfill waste and provides sustainable materials for local projects. Mulched trees are used to maintain trails, prevent soil erosion, and support community beautification efforts.
Visit the Wake County Government website or your city’s public works page for detailed recycling schedules and guidelines. By participating, you’ll help make the post-holiday season greener and more sustainable for everyone.
Happy recycling! 🌲♻️

Designating specific hours, boundaries, and waste management systems can ensure the district operates smoothly and responsibly.
As Wake Forest evolves, a social district would be a forward-thinking step that aligns with the town’s vision for growth and innovation. By balancing tradition with modern amenities, Wake Forest can create a lively and inclusive downtown experience that benefits everyone.

This Week’s Health Tip
Brain Health
Your brain is the command center of your body, managing thoughts, emotions, movements, and vital functions. Just like the rest of your body, your brain requires proper care to function at its best. In a world of constant mental stimulation, maintaining good brain health is more important than ever. Here are some practical steps and scientific insights to enhance and preserve your cognitive abilities.
The food you eat significantly impacts your brain's health. A diet rich in nutrients supports cognitive function and helps prevent neurological decline. Key dietary recommendations include:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fish like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, omega-3s are essential for brain cell structure and communication.
Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Berries, dark chocolate, and green tea help combat oxidative stress, reducing the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
Whole Grains: These provide steady energy and help maintain focus throughout the day.
Leafy Greens: Vegetables like spinach and kale are packed with brain-friendly nutrients like vitamin K, lutein, and beta carotene.
Exercise benefits not just your body but your brain as well. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, promoting the growth of new neurons and improving memory and learning. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly, supplemented by strength training and balance exercises.
Keeping your mind active is essential for maintaining sharp cognitive skills. Activities such as reading, puzzles, learning a new skill, or playing musical instruments stimulate brain connections and even build new neural pathways.
Sleep is crucial for brain health, as it allows your brain to rest, repair, and consolidate memories. Adults should aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep per night. To improve sleep hygiene:
Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
Avoid screens an hour before bedtime.
Create a dark, quiet, and comfortable sleeping environment.
Chronic stress can harm your brain by increasing the production of cortisol, which can impair memory and reduce brain volume over time. Techniques like mindfulness meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and spending time in nature can help reduce stress levels.
Strong social ties and meaningful relationships contribute to mental well-being and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Engaging in regular conversations, participating in group activities, and staying connected with loved ones can significantly enhance brain health.
Certain habits can have a detrimental effect on brain health. These include:
Smoking: Damages blood vessels and increases the risk of stroke and dementia.
Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Can impair memory and cognitive functions.
A Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity negatively affects overall brain function.
Dehydration can impair focus, memory, and overall cognitive performance. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excessive caffeine or sugary drinks.
Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity can harm brain health if left untreated. Regular checkups with your healthcare provider help ensure early detection and management of these risks.
Good brain health is a lifelong commitment that involves a combination of proper nutrition, physical activity, mental stimulation, and healthy habits. By making these strategies part of your daily routine, you can optimize your cognitive abilities, enhance your quality of life, and safeguard your brain for years to come. Start today—your brain will thank you!
