North Carolina Low-Income Assistance Program
Now Accepting Applications
Residents of North Carolina struggling to meet essential expenses can now apply for assistance through the state’s low-income support programs. These programs, designed to provide financial relief and support, are vital for families and individuals who face challenges due to limited income. Applications are open for a variety of services, including help with heating bills, rent, food, childcare, and medical expenses.
Eligibility is determined by income levels relative to the federal poverty guidelines, household size, and specific program requirements. Many programs are available to families, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and anyone whose financial situation meets the criteria. Proof of income, household information, and documentation of financial need may be required during the application process.
The assistance programs include:
Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP): LIEAP provides financial help to cover heating costs during the winter months. Eligible households can receive a one-time payment to help with energy bills.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): Commonly known as food stamps, SNAP helps households purchase groceries. Benefits are provided via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.
Housing Assistance Programs: These programs offer rental assistance and help prevent evictions for low-income tenants. Some programs also assist with utility bills.
Child Care Subsidy: Designed to support working parents or those pursuing education, this subsidy helps cover childcare costs, ensuring children have access to safe and nurturing environments.
Medicaid and Health Insurance: Medicaid offers free or low-cost healthcare to eligible individuals and families. Additional resources may be available for children through the NC Health Choice program.
Work First Family Assistance: This program provides temporary financial assistance to families in need, alongside job training and employment services to help recipients achieve financial independence.
Applications are being accepted online, in person, and by mail. Interested individuals can visit their local Department of Social Services (DSS) office or apply through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) website. Many counties also offer application assistance over the phone.
While some programs accept applications year-round, others, such as LIEAP, are seasonal with specific deadlines. Residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure timely access to funds and services.
Tips for a Successful Application
Gather necessary documents, including proof of income, identification, and utility or rent statements.
Double-check deadlines and requirements for the specific programs you’re applying for.
Contact local DSS offices for assistance if you’re unsure about eligibility or need help completing the application.
With the rising cost of living, these assistance programs are critical in supporting North Carolinians who are facing financial challenges. Don’t hesitate to apply if you or someone you know might benefit from these resources. For more information and to get started, visit NCDHHS’s website or call your local DSS office today.
The time to seek support is now. These programs can make a significant difference in helping families and individuals meet basic needs and achieve greater financial stability. Spread the word so others in your community can take advantage of this vital assistance.
Four Hospitalized After Wake County Mobile Home Fire
Tragedy struck in Wake County as a mobile home fire left four individuals hospitalized on Saturday evening. The fire broke out in a mobile home park located in the eastern part of the county, sending plumes of smoke visible for miles and prompting an immediate response from local fire and emergency services.
Authorities reported that the fire was first noticed around 6:30 PM, with neighbors calling 911 after seeing flames engulfing the structure. Several fire crews arrived at the scene within minutes, battling the blaze and working to rescue those trapped inside.
Witnesses described the fire as intense and fast-moving. "It was terrifying. The fire spread so quickly, and we could hear people calling for help," said one neighbor who helped alert first responders.
Four individuals were rescued from the burning home and transported to nearby hospitals. Their injuries range from smoke inhalation to burns of varying severity. As of Sunday morning, two of the victims remain in critical condition, while the other two are in stable condition.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, but neighbors described them as a family of four, including two children. Emergency responders confirmed that all occupants had been accounted for.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Initial reports suggest that the fire may have been sparked by an electrical malfunction, but investigators are working to determine the exact source. The Wake County Fire Marshal’s Office, alongside local law enforcement, is conducting a thorough examination of the site.
Officials have urged residents to check smoke detectors in their homes and review fire safety plans. "This incident is a sobering reminder of how quickly a fire can escalate," said Wake County Fire Marshal James Henson. "Having working smoke alarms and a family evacuation plan can save lives."
In the aftermath of the fire, the local community has rallied to support the family. Several neighbors have begun organizing donations of clothing, food, and financial assistance to help the victims rebuild their lives. A local church has also stepped in, offering temporary shelter and resources.
"We're heartbroken by what happened, but we're coming together to make sure this family knows they’re not alone," said one community organizer.
In light of the incident, fire officials are reminding residents to take preventive measures:
Check Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke detectors are installed and functioning properly in all rooms.
Plan Evacuations: Practice fire drills and have a clear escape plan.
Avoid Overloaded Circuits: Do not overload electrical outlets or use damaged cords.
Stay Alert with Heaters: Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from flammable objects.
Be Vigilant in Kitchens: Most home fires start in the kitchen, so never leave cooking unattended.

Wake Forest Board of Commissioners Votes
Against Creating Social District
During its January 3, 2023, work session, the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 against the establishment of a social district.
A social district would have allowed patrons to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and enjoy them within designated public areas. Proponents of the idea argued that it could boost local businesses and enhance the town's downtown atmosphere. However, concerns about public safety, enforcement, and the overall impact on the community ultimately influenced the decision.
The narrow vote reflects differing perspectives on how to balance economic development with community priorities. While the proposal did not pass, discussions on future initiatives to support local businesses are expected to continue.

This Week’s Health Tip
Collagen: A Vital Protein for Health and Wellness
Collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, plays a crucial role in maintaining the structure and elasticity of skin, joints, bones, and connective tissues. Naturally produced by the body, collagen acts as a building block that supports strength and resilience in various tissues.
Collagen supplements have gained popularity for their potential to enhance skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and improve hydration. Additionally, they may support joint health by reducing stiffness and discomfort, making them a popular choice among individuals with arthritis or active lifestyles. Collagen is also believed to promote healthier hair, nails, and gut health.
Collagen is found in animal-based foods like bone broth, fish, and chicken skin. Supplements, available in powders, capsules, or drinks, often use collagen peptides, which are easier for the body to absorb.
While the body produces collagen naturally, production declines with age, leading to visible signs of aging and joint wear. Collagen supplementation may benefit aging adults, athletes, or anyone looking to support their skin and connective tissues.
As with any supplement, individuals should consult with a healthcare provider before starting collagen to ensure it aligns with their health needs.
