On January 15, 1771, Governor William Tryon approved the bill establishing Wake County, North Carolina. The county was formed from portions of Cumberland, Johnston, and Orange counties, with the act officially taking effect on March 12, 1771. Its creation was influenced by the need for better governance in the growing Piedmont region, particularly after the recent suppression of the Regulator Rebellion.
The bill to establish the county was introduced on December 17, 1770, by Joel Lane, a representative from western Johnston County. After amendments and several readings, the bill received final approval on January 15. Wake County was named after Margaret Wake, Governor Tryon’s wife.
The first courthouse was constructed in a settlement initially called Wake Courthouse, now known as Bloomsbury. Later, in 1792, the area saw further prominence when Raleigh was selected as the state capital and officially established within Wake County. This decision solidified the county's significance in North Carolina’s history.
January 15 marks a pivotal moment in Wake County’s story, setting the stage for its development and its role as a central part of the state.

Are You Considering Adoption?
Adopting a child is a life-changing decision that requires careful consideration and planning. Here are some important factors to keep in mind, as you embark on the adoption journey.
Decide whether you want to adopt within your country or from abroad. International adoptions often involve more paperwork, travel, and cultural considerations.
Open vs. Closed Adoption: In an open adoption, the birth parents and adoptive parents may maintain contact, while a closed adoption means there is no contact or exchange of identifying information.
Foster Care Adoption: Adopting a child from foster care may be an option if you're open to adopting older children or those with special needs.
Most adoption agencies have specific requirements for prospective adoptive parents, including age, marital status, financial stability, and health. Make sure you meet the agency's criteria. A home study is a detailed process where social workers assess your living environment, parenting skills, and overall readiness to adopt. It includes interviews, background checks, and references.
Adoption can be expensive, especially for international or private adoptions. Costs can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the type of adoption. Explore available financial support, grants, and tax credits for adoptive families. The U.S. offers adoption tax credits, and some states provide subsidies for adopting children from foster care.
Adoption can come with unique emotional challenges for both parents and children. Be prepared for a range of emotional responses from the child, particularly if the child has experienced trauma or loss. Be realistic about the adoption process. It may take longer than expected, and there may be obstacles along the way. The process may also involve adjusting to the child's needs, including medical or behavioral challenges. Building a strong emotional connection with an adopted child takes time. Be patient and understanding as you foster a relationship based on trust and love.
Choose an agency that offers ongoing support before, during, and after the adoption. Counseling, support groups, and educational resources can help you manage the transition. Having a strong support network of friends, family, or adoption groups is essential. Support groups can help you connect with other adoptive parents who share similar experiences.
Consider whether you're open to adopting an infant, a toddler, or an older child. Older children or children with special needs may require more care and support. It's essential to understand the child’s health history, including any prenatal exposure to substances, genetic conditions, or developmental delays. This information can help you provide the right care. If you're adopting a child of a different race or culture, be prepared to address potential cultural differences and create an inclusive environment for the child.
Adoption laws vary by state and country. Be sure to understand the legal requirements for finalizing an adoption, including parental rights, consent, and the legal steps to complete the process. In some cases, post-adoption visits may be required to ensure the child’s well-being. Understanding the legal requirements and the timeline for finalizing adoption is crucial.
Adoption is a lifelong commitment. It’s important to remember that even after the adoption is finalized, your role as a parent continues to evolve as the child grows. Many adopted children may have questions about their birth parents and their identity as they get older. Open, age-appropriate discussions about adoption can help children process these feelings.
Be prepared for an adjustment period after the child is placed in your home. Children may experience grief, loss, or behavioral issues as they adapt to their new life. Therapy or counseling for the child, as well as for the family, can provide vital support to work through any emotional or behavioral challenges that arise.
Adopting a child is a significant and rewarding decision, but it requires thoughtfulness and preparation. By considering these factors and seeking the right resources and support, you can provide a loving and stable home for your child.

This Week’s Health Tip
Tips for Healthy Hair, Nails, and Skin
Your hair, nails, and skin are outward signs of your overall health. By adopting the right habits and lifestyle choices, you can ensure they look their best while staying strong and resilient. Here are some essential tips to keep your hair, nails, and skin in top shape:
Nutrition is Key
Eat a Balanced Diet: Foods rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids promote healthy skin and hair.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water helps keep your skin plump, your nails flexible, and your hair shiny.
Protein Power: Since hair and nails are made of keratin, a type of protein, ensure your diet includes eggs, lean meats, nuts, and legumes.
Establish a Routine
Skin: Cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin daily. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.
Hair: Avoid overwashing, which can strip hair of natural oils. Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type.
Nails: Keep your nails clean and dry to prevent infections. Moisturize your cuticles to avoid brittleness.
Avoid Harsh Products
Opt for gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and skincare products without harsh chemicals.
Minimize the use of heat styling tools and apply heat protectant sprays when necessary.
Use acetone-free nail polish removers to prevent drying out your nails.
Prioritize Self-Care
Get Enough Sleep: Rest allows your body to repair and regenerate, improving skin elasticity and hair strength.
Manage Stress: High stress levels can lead to issues like hair loss, brittle nails, and skin breakouts. Practice relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity improves circulation, delivering nutrients to your skin, hair, and nails.
Stay Consistent with Maintenance
Trim your hair regularly to prevent split ends.
Keep your nails trimmed and shaped to avoid breakage.
Exfoliate your skin weekly to remove dead cells and promote a healthy glow.
By combining these habits with patience and care, you can achieve and maintain vibrant hair, strong nails, and radiant skin. Small, consistent efforts can make a big difference in your overall appearance and confidence!
This Week’s Recipe From Our Kitchen To Yours!
Bourbon Salmon
Ingredients:
4 salmon fillets (6 oz each)
2/3 cup bourbon
3 tbsp soy sauce
3 tbsp brown sugar
1 ½ tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
2 tbsp olive oil
2 - 3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions:
Prepare the marinade:
In a small bowl, combine the bourbon, soy sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice. Stir well until the sugar dissolves.
Marinate the salmon:
Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish or resealable plastic bag.
Pour the marinade over the salmon and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, preferably 1 hour.
Preheat the grill or skillet:
If you're grilling, preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
If using a skillet, heat it over medium heat with a little oil or cooking spray.
Cook the salmon:
Remove the salmon from the marinade (reserve some marinade for glazing).
Grill or cook the salmon fillets for about 4-5 minutes per side (depending on thickness) until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
If using a skillet, you can glaze the salmon with the reserved marinade in the last minute of cooking for extra flavor.
Serve:
Serve the bourbon salmon with your favorite side dish, such as roasted vegetables or a fresh salad.
Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired.
Enjoy your flavorful bourbon salmon!
