Brutal Cold and Snow Expected in Wake County
Wake County is gearing up for a blast of brutal cold and the possibility of snow this week. With temperatures expected to drop significantly and snow in the forecast, residents should be prepared for winter conditions.
The forecast calls for a combination of freezing temperatures and cloudy skies, with the possibility of snow accumulation in some areas. The region will experience cold temperatures throughout the week, with highs struggling to reach the mid-30s and lows dropping below freezing at night.
A significant cold front is moving into the area, bringing with it a wind chill factor that will make it feel much colder than the actual temperature. Wind chills are expected to dip into the 10-20°F range, which could lead to dangerous conditions for those spending time outside.
While the primary concern is the cold, light snow is also expected in Wake County between Tuesday, January 21, and Wednesday, January 22. Though snow accumulation is expected to be minimal, even a small amount can make roads slippery and hazardous for driving. The National Weather Service is warning of icy conditions in the early morning hours, and the cold temperatures could cause untreated roads to freeze.
With the cold weather and snow in the forecast, residents should take the following precautions:
Bundle up: Dress in warm layers and ensure that all family members and pets stay warm.
Protect your home: Ensure that your heating system is working properly and check for any drafts.
Winterize your vehicle: If you need to travel, make sure your car is prepared for winter conditions. This includes checking tires, filling windshield fluid, and having emergency supplies.
Stay indoors when possible: Limit time outside to avoid frostbite or other cold-related injuries.
If you need to drive, use caution. Icy roads could make travel dangerous, especially early in the day before temperatures rise. Check road conditions before heading out and allow extra time for your commute. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, and remember to drive slower than usual in winter weather.
Wake County is in for a week of extreme cold and the potential for snow, making it important for residents to stay informed and prepared. Whether you’re staying inside or braving the outdoors, taking steps to protect yourself and your property will help ensure you stay safe during this winter weather event.

This Week’s Health Tip
The FDA Recently Announced a Ban on Red Dye No. 3
(FD&C Red No. 3), Citing Health Concerns Linked to Its Use.
This synthetic dye, commonly used to give a bright cherry-red color to foods, beverages, and medications, has faced scrutiny for decades. The ban will take effect on January 15, 2027, for all foods and on January 18, 2028, for ingested drugs.
Research has shown that high doses of Red Dye No. 3 caused thyroid tumors in male lab rats, raising concerns about its potential cancer risk to humans. Although definitive links to human health remain debated, the FDA’s decision aligns with the Delaney Clause, which prohibits additives shown to cause cancer in animals.
Red Dye No. 3 has been widely used in a variety of products, including:
Candies: Popular sweets like Airheads, candy corn, and Jelly Belly jelly beans.
Baked Goods and Snacks: Items such as cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and frostings.
Dairy and Frozen Desserts: Products like strawberry milk, ice creams, frozen yogurt, and popsicles (e.g., TruMoo Strawberry Milk).
Fruit Products: Maraschino cherries and canned fruit cocktails (e.g., Kroger Extra Cherry Fruit Cocktail).
Beverages: Certain sodas and colorful drinks.
Medications: Some over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol PM used the dye for coloring.
Manufacturers must reformulate affected products to eliminate Red Dye No. 3 before the deadline. This decision brings U.S. regulations closer to those of the European Union, where the dye has been heavily restricted for years. Consumers can expect safer alternatives in the future as companies transition to natural or less harmful synthetic dyes.
The ban marks a significant step toward prioritizing public health and reducing exposure to potentially harmful substances.
Western Omelet Bites
These Western Omelet Bites are an easy breakfast or snack, packed with ham, bell peppers, onions, and cheese. They're great for meal prepping or as a grab-and-go option!
Ingredients:
6 large eggs or egg whites
1/2 cup cooked ham, diced
1/4 cup yellow bell pepper, finely chopped
1/4 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup milk or cream (optional, for fluffiness)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Olive oil or non-stick spray (for greasing)
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a mini muffin tin with olive oil or non-stick spray.
Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs and milk (if using) until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
Add the Fillings: Stir in the diced ham, chopped bell peppers, onions, and shredded cheese until evenly distributed.
Fill the Muffin Tin: Pour the egg mixture into each muffin cup, filling about 3/4 full. A small ladle or measuring cup works well for this.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the omelet bites are fully set and lightly golden on top. Test with a toothpick—if it comes out clean, they’re done.
Cool and Serve: Let the bites cool for a few minutes before removing them from the muffin tin. Serve warm, or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Optional Add-ins:
Add mushrooms, spinach, or zucchini for extra veggies.
Include crumbled bacon or sausage for more protein.
Spice things up with a drizzle of hot sauce or salsa.
These Western Omelet Bites are perfect for breakfast, snacks, or meal prep. Enjoy!
