1871: Impeachment Trial of Governor William W. Holden

On January 30, 1871, the impeachment trial of North Carolina Governor William W. Holden commenced. Holden was charged with using and paying troops to suppress insurrection, specifically targeting Ku Klux Klan activity in the state. The trial lasted nearly three months, and on March 22, the North Carolina Senate found Holden guilty and ordered his removal from office. He became the first governor in the United States to be removed from office through impeachment.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Guns Found on Wake County School Campuses

Rising Concerns Among Parents

Parents across Wake County are voicing their concerns after four separate incidents of firearms being discovered on Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) campuses this school year. These unsettling events have reignited discussions about school safety, firearm security, and the critical role of early education in preventing such incidents.

The discovery of guns on school grounds has prompted swift action from school officials and law enforcement. Authorities are investigating each case thoroughly to determine how the firearms were brought onto campus and to ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent future occurrences. However, the incidents have understandably left parents and guardians alarmed about their children’s safety.

In the wake of these incidents, parents are urging schools and local officials to implement stricter safety protocols. Suggestions include enhanced security measures such as metal detectors, increased police presence on campuses, and more frequent locker and bag checks. While these measures may require additional funding and resources, many parents believe they are necessary to ensure student safety.

"No parent should have to worry about their child’s life being at risk while they’re at school," said Lisa Martinez, a mother of two WCPSS students. "We need to work together to make sure this doesn’t happen again."

Law enforcement and safety experts are emphasizing the importance of firearm safety at home as a crucial step in preventing such incidents. Gun owners are being urged to store firearms securely in locked safes or with trigger locks and to ensure that children and unauthorized individuals cannot access them.

“Firearm safety starts at home,” said Wake County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deputy Mark Hensley. “Parents and guardians must take responsibility for ensuring that firearms are stored safely and securely at all times. Education is key.”

Additionally, schools are being encouraged to incorporate programs that teach students about the dangers of firearms and how to report potential threats. Many parents have also called for better communication from schools regarding safety measures and protocols to reassure families that their concerns are being addressed.

Community leaders and advocacy groups have joined the conversation, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to address the issue. Organizations like Moms Demand Action and local PTA groups have proposed hosting workshops on gun safety and promoting legislative changes that could enhance school security.

Despite the challenges, there is hope that these incidents will serve as a wake-up call for the community to prioritize safety and prevention. Schools, families, and local authorities must work together to create a secure environment where students can learn without fear.

As Wake County grapples with these incidents, the focus remains on proactive measures to ensure the safety of all students and staff. School officials have pledged to review and strengthen security protocols while engaging with parents to address their concerns.

“Our students deserve to feel safe and supported,” said Dr. Cathy Moore, WCPSS Superintendent. “We are committed to working with our community to implement solutions that protect our schools and uphold the trust of our families.”

The recent incidents are a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance and collaboration in maintaining school safety. By addressing the issue through education, enhanced security, and community engagement, Wake County aims to prevent future occurrences and ensure a secure learning environment for all.

Bird Flu Outbreak in North Carolina Turkey Flock

A turkey flock in North Carolina has recently tested positive for bird flu, raising alarms among farmers and local authorities. The discovery has prompted swift actions by state officials and health experts to contain the virus and limit its spread.

The infected flock was located in the western region of the state, where heightened monitoring and testing are now in progress across surrounding farms. Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a serious threat to poultry, capable of causing illness or death among birds.

In response to the outbreak, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) has issued urgent biosecurity guidelines for poultry farmers. These include measures such as restricting farm access, sanitizing equipment, and closely observing flocks for signs of infection.

With North Carolina's poultry industry being a vital part of its agricultural economy, experts are carefully monitoring the situation. While the virus poses minimal risk to humans, authorities are focusing on preventing further outbreaks to protect the state’s poultry industry.

Farmers are being encouraged to report any signs of illness in their birds and adhere to the latest safety protocols to ensure the protection of both their flocks and the public.

"Why Apex, NC is One of the Safest and Most Desirable Places to Live"

Apex, North Carolina, isn’t just one of the safest cities in the state—it’s also ranked No. 65 on the list of safest cities in the entire country (News & Observer). With a population of about 79,000, this charming suburb of Raleigh has one of the lowest violent crime rates in North Carolina. It is no wonder so many families and individuals are moving here to put down roots!

But safety isn’t the only thing attracting people to Apex. The town’s competitive housing market reflects its growing popularity. Currently, homes in Apex spend an average of 25 days on the market—faster than the Wake County average of 30 days. This means buyers need to act quickly, but with the right guidance, finding your dream home here is absolutely possible.

In addition to its safety and thriving real estate market, Apex is an outdoor lover’s dream. One of the town’s best-kept secrets is its incredible network of greenways. These trails, most often paved, wind through neighborhoods, parks, and wooded areas, making them perfect for walking, jogging, or simply enjoying a peaceful escape into nature.

If you’re local or planning to move to the area, you should check out the Greenspace app. It is one of my favorite resources and shows all the greenways and parks throughout the Triangle. Here’s the catch: the app is only available to download if you’re physically in North Carolina. So, if you’re already here, give it a try!

With its unbeatable combination of safety, a competitive real estate market, and outdoor amenities, Apex is a town you don’t want to overlook.

Fiber, Chromium, and Magnesium

Help Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Keeping blood sugar levels in check is vital for everyone, especially those with diabetes or those at risk of developing it. While medications and lifestyle changes are essential, certain nutrients like fiber, chromium, and magnesium have been found to help regulate blood sugar naturally. In this article, we’ll explore how these nutrients support blood sugar control and why they’re worth adding to your diet.

Fiber, especially soluble fiber, can make a big difference when it comes to managing blood sugar. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance in the gut. This slows down the absorption of sugars and carbohydrates, preventing blood sugar spikes after meals and helping to maintain steady glucose levels.

Good sources of fiber include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. For example, oats, beans, lentils, and apples are great sources of soluble fiber and easy to include in your daily meals.

  • Slows sugar absorption: Fiber slows the digestion of carbohydrates, leading to a slower, steadier rise in blood sugar after eating.

  • Boosts insulin sensitivity: A high-fiber diet can help improve how sensitive your body is to insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar.

  • Keeps you full: Fiber-rich foods promote satiety, helping to prevent overeating, which can also support better blood sugar control.

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that plays a key role in how your body processes sugar. It works alongside insulin, a hormone that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Without enough chromium, insulin may not function as effectively, leading to higher blood sugar levels.

Research shows that chromium supplementation may improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar, particularly for those with type 2 diabetes or those at risk. Foods like meat, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables contain chromium, though it can be tough to get enough through diet alone.

  • Improves insulin action: Chromium helps insulin work more efficiently, promoting better glucose absorption by cells.

  • Regulates blood sugar: Chromium enhances insulin sensitivity, which helps your body manage blood sugar levels more effectively.

Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in hundreds of processes within the body, many of which are related to blood sugar regulation. It plays a critical role in how your body responds to insulin, and not getting enough magnesium is linked to insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.

Studies suggest that magnesium supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity and help lower fasting blood sugar levels. Eating magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can also help reduce the risk of blood sugar imbalances.

  • Enhances insulin sensitivity: Magnesium helps your body use insulin more effectively, reducing the risk of high blood sugar.

  • Supports glucose metabolism: Magnesium plays a key role in how your body processes carbohydrates, contributing to balanced blood sugar levels.

  • Reduces inflammation: Magnesium has anti-inflammatory properties that can help combat chronic inflammation, which is often linked to insulin resistance.

Individually, fiber, chromium, and magnesium are all beneficial for managing blood sugar. Together, their effects are even more powerful. Fiber helps control the rate at which sugars are absorbed, chromium boosts insulin function, and magnesium improves insulin sensitivity. These three nutrients work synergistically to promote healthy blood sugar levels.

To get the most benefit, aim to include fiber, chromium, and magnesium-rich foods in your diet. This includes:

  • Fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.

  • Chromium sources like broccoli, meat, and whole grains.

  • Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

Including fiber, chromium, and magnesium in your diet can be an effective strategy for controlling blood sugar levels. These nutrients work together to support the body’s ability to regulate glucose, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce the risk of blood sugar imbalances. If you’re concerned about your blood sugar, consider talking to a healthcare provider or nutritionist to create a personalized plan for managing your levels.
