A Look Back In NC History
On January 30, 1871, the impeachment trial of North Carolina Governor William W. Holden commenced. Holden was charged with using and paying troops to suppress insurrection, specifically targeting Ku Klux Klan activity in the state. The trial lasted nearly three months, and on January 31, 1960, four African American students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro staged a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter. This peaceful protest against racial segregation became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement, sparking similar actions across the United States.
On the same date in 1952, a catastrophic fire broke out in downtown Beaufort, North Carolina, following an explosion at Eastern Rulane, a local business. The explosion occurred while a worker, Charles Hudgins, was transferring gas from a small cylinder to a larger one. The resulting fire caused significant destruction to the downtown area.
These events underscore key moments in North Carolina's history, showcasing both its role in the Civil Rights Movement and the resilience of its communities in the face of adversity. rch 22, the North Carolina Senate found Holden guilty and ordered his removal from office. He became the first governor in the United States to be removed from office through impeachment.

Holly Hill Children's Hospital Halts New Admissions
Following Investigation
Raleigh, NC – Holly Hill Children's Hospital has temporarily stopped accepting new pediatric patients as of mid-January 2025, following an investigation by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). The investigation uncovered multiple violations of care standards, prompting the hospital to pause admissions while addressing compliance issues.
While specific details of the violations have not been released, state health officials emphasized the need for immediate corrective action. In response, hospital administrators have pledged to improve patient care, enhance staff training, and strengthen safety protocols to meet regulatory standards.
"Our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of every child in our care," a hospital spokesperson stated. "We are actively working with state officials to resolve these concerns and resume admissions as soon as possible."
The temporary closure has raised concerns among families seeking mental health treatment for children in the Raleigh area. Advocacy groups urge swift improvements to prevent disruptions in critical care services.
NCDHHS will continue monitoring Holly Hill's progress, with further evaluations planned in the coming weeks. In the meantime, families in need of pediatric behavioral health services are being referred to alternative facilities in the region.

Fiber, Chromium, and Magnesium
Help Lower Blood Sugar Levels
Keeping blood sugar levels in check is vital for everyone, especially those with diabetes or those at risk of developing it. While medications and lifestyle changes are essential, certain nutrients like fiber, chromium, and magnesium have been found to help regulate blood sugar naturally. In this article, we’ll explore how these nutrients support blood sugar control and why they’re worth adding to your diet.
Fiber, especially soluble fiber, can make a big difference when it comes to managing blood sugar. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance in the gut. This slows down the absorption of sugars and carbohydrates, preventing blood sugar spikes after meals and helping to maintain steady glucose levels.
Good sources of fiber include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. For example, oats, beans, lentils, and apples are great sources of soluble fiber and easy to include in your daily meals.
Slows sugar absorption: Fiber slows the digestion of carbohydrates, leading to a slower, steadier rise in blood sugar after eating.
Boosts insulin sensitivity: A high-fiber diet can help improve how sensitive your body is to insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar.
Keeps you full: Fiber-rich foods promote satiety, helping to prevent overeating, which can also support better blood sugar control.
Chromium is an essential trace mineral that plays a key role in how your body processes sugar. It works alongside insulin, a hormone that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Without enough chromium, insulin may not function as effectively, leading to higher blood sugar levels.
Research shows that chromium supplementation may improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar, particularly for those with type 2 diabetes or those at risk. Foods like meat, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables contain chromium, though it can be tough to get enough through diet alone.
Improves insulin action: Chromium helps insulin work more efficiently, promoting better glucose absorption by cells.
Regulates blood sugar: Chromium enhances insulin sensitivity, which helps your body manage blood sugar levels more effectively.
Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in hundreds of processes within the body, many of which are related to blood sugar regulation. It plays a critical role in how your body responds to insulin, and not getting enough magnesium is linked to insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.
Studies suggest that magnesium supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity and help lower fasting blood sugar levels. Eating magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can also help reduce the risk of blood sugar imbalances.
Enhances insulin sensitivity: Magnesium helps your body use insulin more effectively, reducing the risk of high blood sugar.
Supports glucose metabolism: Magnesium plays a key role in how your body processes carbohydrates, contributing to balanced blood sugar levels.
Reduces inflammation: Magnesium has anti-inflammatory properties that can help combat chronic inflammation, which is often linked to insulin resistance.
Individually, fiber, chromium, and magnesium are all beneficial for managing blood sugar. Together, their effects are even more powerful. Fiber helps control the rate at which sugars are absorbed, chromium boosts insulin function, and magnesium improves insulin sensitivity. These three nutrients work synergistically to promote healthy blood sugar levels.
To get the most benefit, aim to include fiber, chromium, and magnesium-rich foods in your diet. This includes:
Fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.
Chromium sources like broccoli, meat, and whole grains.
Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
Including fiber, chromium, and magnesium in your diet can be an effective strategy for controlling blood sugar levels. These nutrients work together to support the body’s ability to regulate glucose, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce the risk of blood sugar imbalances. If you’re concerned about your blood sugar, consider talking to a healthcare provider or nutritionist to create a personalized plan for managing your levels.
