Charlotte, North Carolina
History, Attractions, and Travel Guide
Charlotte, often called the "Queen City," was founded in 1768 and named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III of England. The city played a significant role in the American Revolution, with local leaders signing the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775, a document asserting independence from British rule.
During the 19th century, Charlotte became a gold rush hub, housing the first U.S. branch mint. In the 20th century, the city transformed into a financial powerhouse, home to Bank of America and major financial institutions. Today, Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., blending Southern charm with urban sophistication.

Charlotte enjoys a moderate climate, making it a great destination year-round, but the best seasons to visit are spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). In spring, the city comes alive with blooming flowers, comfortable temperatures, and outdoor festivals. Fall offers crisp air, colorful foliage, and plenty of events, making it ideal for exploring. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters are generally mild with occasional cold snaps.
The city of Charlotte offers various transportation options, but how you get around depends on your plans:
The LYNX Blue Line Light Rail is a convenient and affordable way to travel through Uptown and South End, connecting key locations like the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Bank of America Stadium, and shopping districts.
Buses and Streetcars provide additional public transit options, but routes can be limited for tourists.
If you plan to visit Lake Norman, the U.S. National Whitewater Center, or surrounding areas, renting a car is the best option for flexibility.
Rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) and taxis are readily available, especially in Uptown and near major attractions.
In addition, Charlotte has a wide range of accommodations, from high-end luxury to budget-friendly stays:
Luxury Stays: The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte offers upscale accommodations with a spa, rooftop bar, and fine dining. Another high-end option is The Grand Bohemian Hotel, known for its artistic décor and central location.
Mid-Range Hotels: Popular choices include The Westin Charlotte and Omni Charlotte Hotel, both offering great amenities and prime locations.
Budget-Friendly Options: If you’re looking for an affordable stay, Aloft Charlotte Downtown and Hampton Inn & Suites SouthPark provide comfortable accommodations at a lower cost.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is one of the busiest airports in the U.S. and a major hub for American Airlines, offering direct flights to cities across the country and internationally. Located just 15 minutes from Uptown, the airport provides rental car services, public transportation, and rideshare options for easy access to the city. If you have a layover, the airport features plenty of dining options, lounges, and shopping.
