What’s Happening in Wake County?

Moore County Wildfires

A Growing Concern

In early March 2025, Moore County, North Carolina, faced a series of intense wildfires fueled by dry conditions and strong winds. On March 1, brush fires began spreading across Moore, Durham, and Harnett counties, with Moore County seeing the most significant activity. The dry conditions made the fire's spread faster, requiring immediate action from local firefighting teams.

By March 2, the fire near the Harnett-Moore County line had nearly doubled in size, prompting even more resources to be deployed in the effort to contain it. The wildfire activity was particularly concerning given the higher-than-normal fire risks due to low humidity and unseasonably warm temperatures.

These fires are a stark reminder of the dangers posed by wildfire season in North Carolina, especially during times of dry, windy weather. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow any burn bans or fire warnings to help prevent further incidents.

Local authorities and the fire departments have been working tirelessly to contain the fires and minimize their impact on the community. As we move further into the year, the need for fire safety awareness and preparation remains crucial for Moore County residents and those in neighboring areas.

Multiple Wildfires Burn Across North Carolina

Amid Dry Conditions

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – This weekend, North Carolina saw significant wildfire activity, with over 400 acres burning in the mountains and at least four other major fires burning across the state, totaling nearly 600 acres, according to state officials.

The largest of these fires, the Falls Dam Fire, is located in Uwharrie National Forest in Montgomery County, where around 300 acres have already burned. This wildfire, located just west of Moore County, which also saw a few wildfires on Saturday, continues to grow. The fire is south of Art Lily Campground, near Forest Road 516, and north of the Yadkin River Dam Overlook. Crews are working to contain the blaze by building new containment lines, reinforcing existing ones, and conducting aerial surveillance, while also using mechanized equipment to manage the heavy fuel loads, fire officials report.

Along with the fire in Uwharrie National Forest, other active wildfires were reported across North Carolina, from the coast to the mountains:

  • Carteret County: In Croatan National Forest, the Ramshorn Fire has burned 114 acres, located three miles west of Ashley Place/US 70, adjacent to Nine Foot Road.

  • Cherokee County: In Nantahala National Forest, the McClure Road Fire has burned 20 acres, located 6 miles southwest along U.S. 64.

  • Haywood County: In Pisgah National Forest, the Hicks Cemetery Fire has burned 50 acres, located west of I-40 at Cold Springs Creek Road/Forest Road 288.

Fire officials are warning that unseasonably warm weather and low humidity levels have created heightened fire risks across the state. Careless debris burning remains one of the leading causes of these wildfires.

As the fires continue to burn, officials urge residents to stay vigilant, follow fire safety guidelines, and avoid any activities that could inadvertently start a fire.
