Blowing Rock, North Carolina

A Scenic Mountain Retreat with Rich History and Resilience

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Blowing Rock, North Carolina, is a charming town renowned for its breathtaking views, historical significance, and outdoor activities. Despite challenges from past hurricanes and flooding, Blowing Rock continues to stand strong, offering visitors an unforgettable mountain getaway.

Blowing Rock is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 80 miles northwest of Winston-Salem and 200 miles northeast of Atlanta. Its easy access from major highways makes it a convenient destination for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation in the mountains.

Blowing Rock's history dates back to Native American tribes, including the Cherokee and Catawba, who inhabited the region long before European settlers arrived. By the mid-1800s, the Greene family established the first permanent settlement, followed by other pioneering families, including the Hayes and Coffey families. In 1889, Blowing Rock was officially incorporated, becoming a popular summer resort for those seeking relief from the summer heat of lower elevations. Today, historic buildings like the Green Park Inn and Blowing Rock Hotel remain symbols of the town's heritage.

Must-See Points of Interest

  • The Blowing Rock: This iconic rock formation offers stunning views of the Johns River Gorge and is the inspiration for the legendary story of Peter Pan.

  • Bass Lake: A peaceful spot perfect for fishing, picnicking, and leisurely walks.

  • Moses Cone Memorial Park: A historical park with scenic hiking trails and the magnificent Flat Top Manor.

  • Appalachian Ski Mountain: For winter sports lovers, this ski resort offers a variety of slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels.

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene caused flooding and disruption in Western North Carolina, including Blowing Rock. While the town faced some challenges, its resilient community and well-maintained infrastructure ensured that Blowing Rock remained largely unaffected by major damage.

Neighbors and visitors banded together to assist with recovery efforts, demonstrating the town's strength and unity in the face of adversity.

What to Do and See in Blowing Rock

  • Hike or drive along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway for unmatched mountain views.

  • Take a stroll around Bass Lake, enjoying the serene environment and perfect photo ops.

Blowing Rock is currently experiencing cool, winter temperatures, with a forecast of partly cloudy skies and temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to 40s °F. Beware of the Latest Microsoft Update Scam

How to Protect Yourself

In today's digital world, cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to exploit unsuspecting users. One of the latest and most dangerous internet scams involves fake Microsoft updates, tricking people into downloading malicious software. This scam can lead to stolen personal data, locked files, or even full system compromise.

Scammers use deceptive tactics to make their attack seem legitimate. Here’s how they operate:

  • Fake Emails or Pop-ups – Users receive an email or see a pop-up message claiming that their Windows operating system is out of date. The message may look official, using Microsoft’s logo and branding to appear credible.

  • Malicious Downloads – The message includes a link or attachment labeled as a “critical Windows update.” If clicked, it downloads malware, such as ransomware or spyware, onto the device.

  • System Compromise – Once installed, the malware can steal sensitive information, lock files and demand a ransom, or allow hackers remote access to the computer.

It’s important to recognize the red flags of this scam to avoid falling victim:

  • The email or pop-up comes from an unknown or unofficial sender pretending to be Microsoft.

  • The message creates a sense of urgency, pressuring you to act immediately.

  • There are spelling and grammar mistakes, which are common in scam messages.

  • The notification asks for payment to install the update—Microsoft never charges for security updates.

  • The update request appears as a random pop-up on a website rather than within Windows settings.

How to Stay Safe from This Scam

Fortunately, you can protect yourself by following a few simple precautions:

Only update Windows through official settings. Check for updates by going to Settings > Windows Update on your computer.
Never click on links or download files from unsolicited emails claiming to be from Microsoft.
Enable automatic updates in Windows to ensure your system stays secure without needing manual downloads.
Use reliable antivirus software to detect and block malicious files before they can do harm.
Be cautious of pop-ups or websites that claim to offer Microsoft updates—Microsoft does not distribute updates through random websites.

What to Do If You Fall Victim

If you suspect that you have downloaded a fake update, take action immediately:

  • Disconnect from the internet to prevent further data theft.

  • Run a full system scan using a trusted antivirus program.

  • Report the scam to Microsoft through their official website.

  • Change your passwords, especially if you entered any sensitive information.

Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, but awareness is your best defense. By staying informed and following security best practices, you can avoid falling victim to these fake Microsoft update scams. Always remember—Microsoft updates should only be installed directly from your device’s settings, never from an email or pop-up.

Stay alert, stay secure, and share this information to help others avoid this growing threat.

Update on North Carolina Wildfires

How Close Are They to Wake County?

As of March 4, 2025, multiple wildfires are burning across North Carolina, primarily in the western part of the state. The largest active fire is in Polk County, near the towns of Tryon and Saluda. This fire has burned approximately 500 acres and is 30% contained. Other significant fires have been reported in Macon and Haywood counties.

The affected areas are located in Western North Carolina, approximately 250 miles west of Wake County. At this time, there are no active wildfires in Wake County, and no immediate threats have been reported.

Due to dry conditions and gusty winds, the National Weather Service has issued fire danger warnings for parts of North and South Carolina. Residents are urged to follow local burn bans and take extra precautions to prevent accidental fires.

Wake County, NC Property Taxes in 2025

What Homeowners Need to Know

In 2025, Wake County, North Carolina, is experiencing significant changes in property taxes due to a countywide property revaluation and adjustments in tax rates. While tax rates have decreased, many homeowners are seeing higher tax bills due to rising property values.

Wake County conducted a countywide property revaluation in January 2024, affecting over 425,000 properties. This reassessment aimed to align property values with fair market rates, resulting in higher valuations for many homeowners. (Wake County Tax Administration)

To help offset rising property values, Wake County reduced the property tax rate from 65.7 cents to 51.35 cents per $100 of assessed value. Similarly, the City of Raleigh lowered its rate from 43.3 cents to 35.5 cents per $100. Despite these reductions, homeowners with higher property valuations are still seeing increased tax bills.

For example, a homeowner with a median-assessed home value of $462,000 now faces a tax bill of $2,358, which is higher than in previous years. (ABC11 News)

The additional revenue generated from higher property values is being allocated to:

  • Education: Over half of the $2.08 billion budget supports Wake County Public Schools, Wake Tech Community College, and early childhood programs.

  • Public Services: Increased funding for public safety, affordable housing, and social services to meet growing community needs.

What Homeowners Can Do

💰 Review Your Tax Bill: Check your updated assessment and bill online.
📌 Explore Payment Plans: Wake County offers short-term payment plans for those needing assistance.
📞 Appeal If Necessary: If you believe your property valuation is incorrect, you can file an appeal with the county.

While Wake County’s tax rate has gone down, the impact of rising property values means many residents are paying more in property taxes in 2025. Staying informed and reviewing your tax bill is essential to understanding how these changes affect you.

Essential Oil Use For Measles!

Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, but it's important to note that there is limited scientific evidence supporting its use as a treatment for measles specifically. Measles is caused by a virus, and the most effective approach is medical care, not home remedies. However, tea tree oil may offer some relief for certain symptoms related to the illness.

Although tea tree oil won't cure the measles virus itself, it may help with some of the symptoms:

Antibacterial and Antiviral Properties: Tea tree oil contains compounds, like terpinen-4-ol, which have been shown to have antibacterial and antiviral effects. While it may not directly fight the measles virus, it could help reduce the risk of secondary skin infections that might occur due to the rash or damaged skin.

Anti-inflammatory Effects: The rash from measles can often be itchy and inflamed. Tea tree oil’s anti-inflammatory properties might help reduce this inflammation and soothe irritated skin.

Skin Soothing: The cooling and calming effect of tea tree oil could offer relief to irritated skin, making it more comfortable for someone dealing with the measles rash.

If you choose to use tea tree oil to help manage symptoms, it's essential to follow these guidelines:

Want More Information on Essential Oils and Natural Alternatives?

Dilute It: Never apply tea tree oil directly to the skin. Always dilute it with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil. A typical dilution ratio is 1-2 drops of tea tree oil per tablespoon of carrier oil.

Patch Test: Before using the oil on a larger area, apply the diluted mixture to a small patch of skin and wait 24 hours to check for any signs of irritation or allergic reaction.

Topical Application: You can apply the diluted tea tree oil mixture gently to areas affected by the rash. Focus on inflamed or itchy areas, but avoid using it on broken skin or open sores.

Aromatherapy: Some people use tea tree oil in a diffuser to inhale its potential antiviral properties, which could help with symptoms like congestion or discomfort, though it would not directly treat the rash.

Seek Medical Attention: Measles is a serious disease, and tea tree oil is not a substitute for proper medical treatment. Consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and treatment.

  • Avoid Sensitive Areas: Never use tea tree oil near the eyes, mouth, or nose, as it can cause irritation.

  • Consult a Doctor: It's important to check with a healthcare provider before using tea tree oil or any essential oils, especially for managing measles symptoms.

While tea tree oil can help with skin irritation and potentially reduce the risk of secondary infections, it is not a cure for measles. The primary treatment for measles should always be medical care. If you’re considering using tea tree oil for symptom relief, do so carefully, under medical guidance.
