North Carolina's Golden Heritage

A Story of Discovery and Prosperity

North Carolina holds a distinguished place in American history as the birthplace of the nation's first gold rush. The state's connection to gold dates back to 1799 and continues to captivate historians, geologists, and treasure seekers alike. Here's an in-depth look at North Carolina's golden legacy, remarkable discoveries, and enduring impact.

The nation's first gold rush began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, a young boy from Cabarrus County, found a 17-pound gold nugget while playing in Little Meadow Creek. Unaware of its value, the Reed family famously used the nugget as a doorstop for several years before realizing its significance. This discovery marked the start of America's first documented gold rush, attracting miners from far and wide to North Carolina.

North Carolina's gold rush predates California's by 50 years.

The largest gold nugget discovered in North Carolina weighed an astonishing 28 pounds.

Significant Gold Mining Sites

Several key sites played a major role in North Carolina's gold boom:

Reed Gold Mine (Cabarrus County): Recognized as the first documented gold discovery in the U.S., Reed Gold Mine is now a state historic site where visitors can tour the mine and try their hand at gold panning.

Gold Hill (Rowan County): This once-thriving mining town flourished in the 19th century and was home to some of the richest gold deposits in the region.

Ridgeway Mine (Warren County): Although lesser known, this site contributed significantly to North Carolina's gold production boom.

Gold Production and Economic Impact

Between 1804 and 1828, all domestic gold coinage produced by the U.S. Mint was made using North Carolina gold. During this period, North Carolina stood as the nation's leading gold producer until the famed California Gold Rush began in 1848.

To meet the rising demand, branch mints were established in Charlotte and Dahlonega, Georgia to refine and produce gold coins. The Charlotte Mint, founded in 1837, played a vital role in processing North Carolina's gold.

While large-scale gold mining has faded, recreational gold panning and small-scale mining remain popular hobbies in North Carolina. Sites such as Thermal City Gold Mine and Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine continue to attract enthusiasts seeking fortune and adventure.

North Carolina's gold deposits are concentrated in the Piedmont region, where quartz veins formed during ancient geological processes. This mineral-rich landscape has long been a hotspot for prospecting.

North Carolina's gold story is a powerful reminder of the state's natural resources and the adventurous spirit of its early settlers. Whether you're exploring historic sites or testing your luck at modern panning adventures, North Carolina's golden past continues to sparkle with stories of discovery and success.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

School Cellphone Ban Proposal

A new bill introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly, Senate Bill 55, proposes banning the use of cell phones and other wireless devices in public schools during instructional time. The bill would require school districts to create policies prohibiting these devices in class unless explicitly allowed by a teacher for educational purposes. While some lawmakers and parents back the proposal, others argue that cell phones are essential for safety and communication with parents, especially in emergencies.

Wake Forest Baseball Edges Notre Dame 6-5

In a thrilling game, Wake Forest's baseball team narrowly defeated Notre Dame 6-5. The Demon Deacons made an early impact, hitting three solo home runs in the first inning. Despite a strong comeback effort from Notre Dame, including a solo home run from Nick DeMarco and a two-run homer by Bino Watters, Wake Forest's offense held steady to secure the victory. Key players for Notre Dame included Nick DeMarco, Noah Coy, DM Jefferson, Parker Brzustewicz, Bino Watters, Carson Tinney, Brady Gumpf, and Estevan Moreno. Pitcher Jackson Dennies pitched 5.1 innings with three strikeouts but took the loss.

Essential Oil Use For Measles!

Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, but it's important to note that there is limited scientific evidence supporting its use as a treatment for measles specifically. Measles is caused by a virus, and the most effective approach is medical care, not home remedies. However, tea tree oil may offer some relief for certain symptoms related to the illness.

Although tea tree oil won't cure the measles virus itself, it may help with some of the symptoms:

Antibacterial and Antiviral Properties: Tea tree oil contains compounds, like terpinen-4-ol, which have been shown to have antibacterial and antiviral effects. While it may not directly fight the measles virus, it could help reduce the risk of secondary skin infections that might occur due to the rash or damaged skin.

Anti-inflammatory Effects: The rash from measles can often be itchy and inflamed. Tea tree oil’s anti-inflammatory properties might help reduce this inflammation and soothe irritated skin.

Skin Soothing: The cooling and calming effect of tea tree oil could offer relief to irritated skin, making it more comfortable for someone dealing with the measles rash.

If you choose to use tea tree oil to help manage symptoms, it's essential to follow these guidelines:

Dilute It: Never apply tea tree oil directly to the skin. Always dilute it with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil. A typical dilution ratio is 1-2 drops of tea tree oil per tablespoon of carrier oil.

Patch Test: Before using the oil on a larger area, apply the diluted mixture to a small patch of skin and wait 24 hours to check for any signs of irritation or allergic reaction.

Topical Application: You can apply the diluted tea tree oil mixture gently to areas affected by the rash. Focus on inflamed or itchy areas, but avoid using it on broken skin or open sores.

Aromatherapy: Some people use tea tree oil in a diffuser to inhale its potential antiviral properties, which could help with symptoms like congestion or discomfort, though it would not directly treat the rash.

Seek Medical Attention: Measles is a serious disease, and tea tree oil is not a substitute for proper medical treatment. Consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and treatment.

  • Avoid Sensitive Areas: Never use tea tree oil near the eyes, mouth, or nose, as it can cause irritation.

  • Consult a Doctor: It's important to check with a healthcare provider before using tea tree oil or any essential oils, especially for managing measles symptoms.

While tea tree oil can help with skin irritation and potentially reduce the risk of secondary infections, it is not a cure for measles. The primary treatment for measles should always be medical care. If you’re considering using tea tree oil for symptom relief, do so carefully, under medical guidance.

My name is Monisha Majors and I am the proud owner of The Savvy Bookkeeper LLC, local to Wake Forest, NC. I’ve now been in business for two and a half years. I’m a certified QuickBooks Online advisor and I work exclusively with QuickBooks Online and service-based businesses. I provide monthly bookkeeping services; quarterly reviews; catch-up and clean-up projects; QuickBooks Online setup, diagnostic review, and both one-on-one and group training. I also enjoy guest speaking at functions/events and small business cohorts.

A little about myself, I married my college sweetheart (Go Wolfpack!) and we live in Wake Forest with our three adorable boys – ages 4, 2, and 6 months. I have a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and served some years as a finance officer in the Air Force. I then got a Masters in Human Services Counseling and ran a life coaching business for a few years along with teaching Elementary math at the private school attached to our local church.  I have enjoyed all the things I’ve been able to put my hands to in both my educational and vocational endeavors, but nothing compares to partnering with my clients (local small business owners) and helping their businesses to stay complaint and work towards achieving their financial goals.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom to my boys, along with running my virtual bookkeeping business. It can be hectic at times and I have my hands full, but I wouldn’t change it for the world! I value the relationships I have built since I’ve been in business. I may be a bit biased, but my clients are the absolute best!

I am currently taking new clients. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
