New Bern, NC
A Rich History and Charming Destination
New Bern, North Carolina, is a city brimming with history, southern charm, and picturesque views, making it an ideal destination for history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts, and those seeking a quiet getaway. Situated at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, New Bern offers a delightful blend of historic sites, cultural attractions, and natural beauty.
Founded in 1710 by Swiss immigrants, New Bern holds the distinction of being North Carolina’s second-oldest city. It was named after Bern, Switzerland, the birthplace of its founder, Baron Christoph von Graffenried. In its early years, New Bern was the capital of the Province of North Carolina and later became the first state capital. During the American Revolution, New Bern played an important role and even served as a British headquarters at one point. The city is also famous for being the home of the first printing press in North Carolina, and the first official North Carolina newspaper, The North Carolina Gazette, was published here in 1749.
The city’s history can be seen in its well-preserved architecture, museums, and monuments scattered throughout the area.
Tryon Palace: The crown jewel of New Bern’s history, Tryon Palace is the historic governor’s mansion built in 1767. The palace and its surrounding gardens are a must-see for visitors. The house is an example of early American Georgian architecture and offers a glimpse into life in colonial North Carolina. Guided tours bring the history of the mansion and its prominent residents to life.
New Bern Firemen’s Museum: Learn about the city’s firefighting history and view antique fire trucks and equipment. The museum is housed in the old fire station and offers insight into how New Bern’s firefighters played a role in the city’s development.
The Birthplace of Pepsi: New Bern is the birthplace of the iconic soft drink, Pepsi. In 1893, pharmacist Caleb Bradham created the drink and originally named it “Brad’s Drink.” Visit the Pepsi Store on Middle Street to purchase memorabilia and enjoy some Pepsi-related history.
Harriet’s Chapel & The New Bern National Cemetery: History buffs will appreciate a visit to this cemetery where many Union soldiers from the Civil War are buried. The cemetery is an important landmark and a solemn reminder of the city’s Civil War history.

A little about myself, I married my college sweetheart (Go Wolfpack!) and we live in Wake Forest with our three adorable boys – ages 4, 2, and 6 months. I have a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and served some years as a finance officer in the Air Force. I then got a Masters in Human Services Counseling and ran a life coaching business for a few years along with teaching Elementary math at the private school attached to our local church. I have enjoyed all the things I’ve been able to put my hands to in both my educational and vocational endeavors, but nothing compares to partnering with my clients (local small business owners) and helping their businesses to stay complaint and work towards achieving their financial goals.
I have thoroughly enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom to my boys, along with running my virtual bookkeeping business. It can be hectic at times and I have my hands full, but I wouldn’t change it for the world! I value the relationships I have built since I’ve been in business.
