North Carolina's Coastline is Home to Several Historic Lighthouses

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

  • Location: Corolla, NC

  • History & Features: Constructed in 1875, this lighthouse is distinctive for its unpainted red brick exterior, setting it apart from other lighthouses along the coast. Standing at 158 feet, it was built to fill a navigational gap along the Outer Banks. Visitors can climb its 220 steps to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse

  • Location: Manteo, NC

  • History & Features: The original screwpile lighthouse was built in 1877 to aid navigation through the Croatan Sound. While the original structure no longer exists, a replica was constructed in 2004 and now serves as a museum, offering insights into the maritime history of the area.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

  • Location: Nags Head, NC

  • History & Features: The current lighthouse, completed in 1872, is the third iteration after two previous versions were abandoned due to structural issues. Featuring distinctive horizontal black and white stripes, it stands at 156 feet and is equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse is open seasonally for climbs, providing expansive views of the surrounding marshlands and Atlantic Ocean.

Cape Hatteras LighthouseLocation: Buxton, NC

  • History & Features: Known as "America's Lighthouse," this iconic structure is the tallest brick lighthouse in the nation, standing at 187 feet. Built in 1870, its distinctive black and white spiral pattern makes it easily recognizable. The lighthouse was famously relocated in 1999 to prevent it from succumbing to shoreline erosion. While currently closed for climbing due to restoration efforts, it remains a symbol of the Outer Banks.

Ocracoke Lighthouse

  • Location: Ocracoke, NC

  • History & Features: Erected in 1823, this is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina and the second oldest in the United States. Standing at 75 feet, its solid white exterior and modest height give it a unique charm. While the lighthouse isn't open for climbing, visitors can explore the grounds and appreciate its historical significance.

Cape Lookout Lighthouse

  • Location: Harkers Island, NC

  • History & Features: Completed in 1859, this lighthouse is easily identified by its black and white diamond pattern. It stands at 163 feet and was designed to warn mariners of the treacherous Lookout Shoals. Accessible only by boat, the lighthouse offers seasonal climbs, allowing visitors to experience breathtaking views of the Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Oak Island Lighthouse

  • Location: Caswell Beach, NC

  • History & Features: Built in 1958, this lighthouse boasts one of the brightest lights in the United States, visible for up to 16 miles offshore. Its modern, concrete structure stands at 169 feet, and unique tours allow visitors to climb a series of ship ladders to the gallery level by appointment.

Old Baldy Lighthouse

  • Location: Bald Head Island, NC

  • History & Features: As the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina, Old Baldy was built in 1817. Its weathered, patchwork appearance adds to its historic charm. Standing at 110 feet, visitors can climb its 108 steps to enjoy views of the island and learn about its rich maritime history at the adjacent museum.

Each of these lighthouses offers a unique glimpse into North Carolina's maritime heritage, serving as enduring symbols of guidance and resilience along the coast.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

April 2025 Weather Outlook for Wake County, NC

As spring settles into Wake County, North Carolina, April 2025 promises a mix of mild temperatures, blooming landscapes, and the occasional weather twist typical of the season. Based on historical trends and seasonal patterns, here’s what residents can expect this coming month.

April in Wake County typically sees average highs climbing from the mid-60s°F early in the month to the low 70s°F by late April, with overnight lows ranging from the 40s to the 50s°F. Daytime warmth will invite outdoor activities—perfect for enjoying the Raleigh Rose Garden or a stroll along the Neuse River Trail. However, don’t stash those light jackets just yet; cooler mornings and evenings are likely to linger.

Rainfall is a hallmark of spring here, and April 2025 should be no exception. Expect around 3 to 4 inches of precipitation spread across 8-10 days, often in the form of brief showers or thunderstorms. The wet weather will fuel the region’s vibrant greenery, with dogwoods and azaleas hitting peak bloom. Keep an umbrella handy, especially mid-month when frontal systems tend to roll through.

Severe weather isn’t off the table either. Wake County sits in a zone where spring storms can pack a punch—think gusty winds or a stray hailstorm if conditions align. While tornadoes are rare, the National Weather Service often ramps up alerts in April, so staying tuned to local forecasts is wise.

Overall, April 2025 in Wake County will likely offer a classic taste of Carolina spring: warm sun, refreshing rain, and nature in full swing. Whether you’re planting a garden or planning a picnic, the month should deliver plenty of chances to enjoy the season—just with a side of unpredictability!

Did you know?

Tea Tree Oil and Melaleuca Oil are the same essential oil, both derived from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. However, the quality of the oil can vary greatly depending on factors like purity, distillation process, and sourcing. Here’s why quality matters and what to look for when choosing a tea tree (Melaleuca) oil:

Key Differences in Quality

Purity & Adulteration

  • High-quality tea tree oil should be 100% pure with no added synthetic ingredients or carrier oils.

  • Some lower-quality brands may dilute the oil or mix it with cheaper oils, reducing its effectiveness.

Terpinen-4-ol & Cineole Content

  • The effectiveness of tea tree oil depends on its terpinen-4-ol content, the active compound responsible for its antibacterial and antifungal properties.

  • Quality Standard: A good tea tree oil should contain 30-40% terpinen-4-ol.

  • Cineole Content: This compound can cause skin irritation if too high. High-quality tea tree oil should have less than 4% cineole.

Sourcing & Distillation

  • True tea tree oil comes from Australia, where the plant naturally grows.

  • Proper steam distillation ensures the oil retains its beneficial properties. Poor distillation or improper harvesting can lead to lower potency.

Why Quality Matters

  • Effectiveness: High-quality tea tree oil has stronger antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Safety: Low-quality or impure oils may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

  • Therapeutic Use: Whether for acne, scalp health, cleaning, or wound care, only properly distilled, pure tea tree oil will provide the best results.

How to Choose a High-Quality Tea Tree Oil

Look for 100% pure, undiluted oil (no fillers or additives).
Check the terpinen-4-ol (30-40%) and cineole (<4%) content on the label.
Buy from reputable sources with third-party testing.
Opt for dark glass bottles to prevent oxidation.

PORCH Wake Forest: Fighting Hunger

Strengthening Community

In the heart of Wake Forest, North Carolina, a grassroots hunger relief organization is making a significant impact in the fight against food insecurity. PORCH Wake Forest, part of the broader PORCH Communities network, is dedicated to ensuring that local families have access to nutritious food. Through community-driven efforts, PORCH Wake Forest has become a vital lifeline for those in need.

PORCH Wake Forest operates with a simple yet powerful model: neighbors helping neighbors. The organization collects and distributes non-perishable food items to local food pantries and directly to families in need. By mobilizing volunteers and engaging the community, PORCH Wake Forest provides a sustainable solution to food insecurity in the area.

The organization relies on a network of volunteers who coordinate food drives, collect donations, and distribute supplies. The process typically follows three key steps:

  • Monthly Food Collections – Residents leave non-perishable food donations on their porches, which volunteers collect and bring to a central location.

  • Sorting and Distribution – The donations are sorted and prepared for distribution to local food pantries and partner organizations.

  • Direct Assistance – Many donations go directly to families in need, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals.

This low-cost, high-impact model ensures that food reaches those who need it most while fostering a strong sense of community involvement.

Food insecurity is a growing concern in Wake Forest and across North Carolina. Rising costs of living, economic instability, and unforeseen emergencies leave many families struggling to put food on the table. Organizations like PORCH Wake Forest play a crucial role in addressing these challenges by providing reliable food support to vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, and low-income families.

PORCH Wake Forest thrives on community participation. Here’s how you can help:

  • Donate Food – Non-perishable items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and peanut butter are always in demand.

  • Volunteer – Help collect, sort, and distribute food donations.

  • Host a Collection Drive – Engage your neighborhood, workplace, or school in organizing a food drive.

  • Make a Financial Contribution – Monetary donations help fund food purchases and operational costs.

PORCH Wake Forest is more than a food distribution organization—it’s a movement of people committed to making a difference. By leveraging the power of local giving, the organization continues to grow, ensuring that no family in Wake Forest goes hungry.

To learn more, donate, or volunteer, visit PORCH Wake Forest’s website or follow them on social media. Together, we can build a stronger, more food-secure community.
