Blue Ridge Parkway Beauty: America’s Favorite Drive
The Blue Ridge Parkway, known as “America’s Favorite Drive,” is a 469-mile stretch of road through the stunning Appalachian Highlands that offers some of the most incredible mountain views in the United States. Spanning North Carolina and Virginia, this scenic byway is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and cultural history. Whether you’re taking a leisurely drive or seeking adventure along the way, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers endless opportunities to explore the natural beauty and rich history of the region.
The Blue Ridge Parkway offers panoramic views at nearly every twist and turn, making it an unparalleled experience for nature lovers and photographers. At overlooks like Craggy Gardens in North Carolina, visitors can take in sweeping views of rugged mountain peaks and valleys blanketed in mist, particularly beautiful at sunrise or sunset. The Peaks of Otter in Virginia, with its iconic twin mountains, provide stunning views across Abbott Lake, especially during fall when the foliage turns vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange.
As you drive, the elevation changes constantly, offering ever-evolving vistas. The Grandfather Mountain area, known for its rocky peaks and dramatic cliffs, is one of the most popular spots for hiking and sightseeing. And don't miss the Great Smoky Mountains at the southern end of the parkway, where the sweeping views of the mist-covered peaks will leave you in awe.
One of the greatest joys of the Blue Ridge Parkway is the network of hiking trails that allow you to dive deeper into the landscape. Whether you're an experienced hiker or simply looking for a short stroll, there’s something for everyone.
Linville Falls, one of the parkway’s most iconic landmarks, offers an easy hike to view the beautiful waterfall cascading into the Linville Gorge. The trail provides multiple vantage points, making it a must-see.
For a more challenging hike, the Mount Mitchell Trail leads to the summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The 5.5-mile trek provides rewarding views from the top.
For a family-friendly option, the Mabry Mill Trail near Milepost 176.1 is a short, paved loop that takes visitors to the historic Mabry Mill, where they can watch demonstrations on traditional Appalachian milling and see old-fashioned tools in action.
For those who prefer waterfalls, Looking Glass Falls is an easy stop in North Carolina with a stunning 60-foot waterfall visible from the road, or take a short walk to get a closer view.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is not only a natural treasure, but it also holds cultural significance. Along the drive, there are several historic sites that celebrate the region’s music, history, and heritage.
The Blue Ridge Music Center at Milepost 213.2 is a must-see for music lovers. This center showcases the rich heritage of Appalachian music with exhibits on traditional folk tunes, bluegrass, and the history of the region’s musical influence. You can even experience live music performances during the summer months.
Mabry Mill, located at Milepost 176.1, is a historical landmark featuring a working gristmill and sawmill. The mill is one of the most photographed spots along the parkway and offers visitors a glimpse into Appalachian life through live demonstrations of traditional milling and woodcraft.
The Peaks of Otter Visitor Center, located near Milepost 86, is home to a fascinating exhibit on the history of the parkway, from its construction to its role in preserving the natural beauty of the region.
Château Morrisette Winery (Milepost 171.5) provides an opportunity to explore the region’s winemaking heritage. Located on the parkway, it offers wine tastings and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
![]() Along the parkway, there are numerous areas for picnicking, allowing visitors to take in the beauty of the mountains while enjoying a meal. Some of the most scenic spots include the Raven’s Roost Overlook in Virginia and Julian Price Park in North Carolina, which is also great for canoeing and fishing on Price Lake. For those looking for more active recreation, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor sports. The Blue Ridge Parkway Campgrounds (including Julian Price Park and Linville Falls) provide rustic camping options with scenic views, making it easy to immerse yourself in nature for a night or two. | The Bluff Mountain trail offers both mountain biking and hiking, providing thrills for those who want to explore the mountains on two wheels. For water enthusiasts, Price Lake offers canoe rentals for a peaceful paddle with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. What’s Happening in Wake County?
Current Scams Targeting North Carolina Residents
In North Carolina, various scams are on the rise, with criminals using increasingly sophisticated tactics to deceive individuals. It's crucial to stay informed and take steps to protect yourself from these scams. Here's a look at some of the most common ones circulating in the state.
Toll Road Text Message Scam
Scammers are now targeting drivers by sending fraudulent text messages impersonating toll road agencies like NC Quick Pass. These texts often claim that recipients have unpaid tolls and threaten fines or legal action. The messages typically include links to fake websites designed to steal personal and financial information.
It's important to note that legitimate toll agencies will never ask for payments through text messages. If you receive a suspicious text, don't click any links and report it to the appropriate toll agency.
E-Check Employment Scams
A new scam targets students, offering part-time internships or jobs via unsolicited emails. Victims are then sent electronic checks, which are fake, and are asked to transfer funds to buy equipment for the supposed job.
No legitimate company will pay employees via emailed checks or ask them to send money. Students should be wary of unsolicited job offers and avoid providing personal details or sending funds without verifying the legitimacy of the opportunity.
Phishing Scams Using Fake Websites
Phishing scams are becoming more common, with fraudsters creating realistic websites that look like those of legitimate banks, credit card companies, and online retailers. These fake websites aim to steal personal information, often by asking for login credentials or payment details.
Additionally, scammers are asking victims to pay for goods or services with gift cards. Once the scammer has the gift card details, the funds are quickly drained. To avoid falling victim, always double-check website URLs and never provide sensitive information via unsolicited requests.
AI and Impersonation Scams
Advancements in artificial intelligence have led to more sophisticated scams. AI-generated deepfakes and impersonation tactics make it difficult to differentiate between legitimate communications and fraudulent ones. These scams may include fake voice or video messages from people you know, such as friends or family members, tricking victims into sending money or personal information.
It's essential to stay up-to-date on the latest scam techniques and be skeptical of unexpected communications, especially those requesting urgent action or personal details.
To protect yourself from these scams, keep the following tips in mind:
Be Skeptical: Always approach unsolicited messages, calls, or emails with caution, especially if they ask for personal or financial information.
Verify Requests: If you receive an unexpected message or request, contact the organization or person directly using official contact methods to confirm its legitimacy.
Secure Your Information: Never share sensitive data over insecure platforms or with unknown contacts.
Stay Informed: Stay updated on the latest scam tactics and educate friends and family members about potential risks.
Report Scams: If you suspect a scam, report it to local authorities or consumer protection agencies to help protect others.
By staying informed and vigilant, North Carolina residents can better defend themselves against these ever-evolving scams.

Wake County Real Estate Market Update
Trends, Challenges, and Future Outlook
The Wake County real estate market has continued to exhibit strong growth, attracting both buyers and sellers despite a fluctuating interest rate environment and ongoing economic uncertainty. Homebuyers are finding opportunities, although with a competitive edge as home prices continue to appreciate and homes remain in high demand. This article takes a closer look at the current trends, including home appreciation, days on the market, the number of properties available for sale, interest rates, and the market forecast for the remainder of 2025.
One of the most notable trends in the Wake County real estate market has been home price appreciation. In recent years, home values have consistently increased due to a growing population, a strong local economy, and limited housing inventory. As of early 2025, the average home price in Wake County continues to rise, with some areas experiencing a year-over-year increase of 5-8%. Raleigh, in particular, remains one of the most sought-after cities in the county, drawing both residents from out of state and investors looking to capitalize on a growing market.
The demand for homes, particularly in desirable areas like North Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs, has driven this upward trend in home prices. While the market is still appreciating, some experts predict that the rate of appreciation may slow in the second half of 2025, as higher interest rates begin to impact buying power and affordability.
The number of days on the market (DOM) for properties in Wake County has varied depending on price point and location. As of early 2025, homes are selling faster than in previous years, with the average DOM typically ranging from 20 to 40 days for homes priced below $500,000. However, higher-priced properties (above $750,000) may stay on the market longer, especially in areas further from Raleigh's core. Homes priced in line with buyer demand are still moving quickly, but those priced above the median have to contend with a more cautious pool of buyers.
The competitive nature of the market, particularly in well-established neighborhoods and newer developments, has made it crucial for sellers to price strategically to avoid prolonged listings. This has resulted in an influx of multiple offers in certain price segments, and in many cases, homes are selling above asking price.
Inventory levels in Wake County have remained historically low, especially for single-family homes. As of early 2025, the number of active listings is down by about 15-20% compared to previous years. The inventory shortage, which has been a key challenge for homebuyers, means fewer options and higher competition for available properties.
In response to demand, new construction is expected to pick up, particularly in suburban areas like Apex, Fuquay-Varina, and Garner, where developers are building more affordable homes and family-friendly communities. However, the pace of new construction is not expected to immediately address the inventory imbalance, leaving buyers with fewer choices in the market.
Interest rates have played a significant role in shaping the current real estate environment. As of early 2025, the average mortgage rate is hovering around 6.5% to 7.5%, which is higher than the historically low rates seen over the past decade. These higher rates have made it more difficult for first-time homebuyers to afford homes, particularly in a market where home prices are on the rise.
Despite the higher rates, demand has remained steady, driven by the strong local economy, job growth, and the influx of out-of-state buyers, particularly from areas like New York, California, and the Northeast. However, the challenge remains that higher interest rates often reduce buyers’ purchasing power, leading to more cautious decisions, longer financing periods, and an increasing number of buyers looking for lower-priced homes.
Looking ahead, experts predict that the Wake County real estate market will continue to see growth in 2025, but with a few changes:
Slower Appreciation: Home price growth may slow, especially in the second half of 2025, as buyers adjust to higher interest rates. However, Wake County will likely remain one of the stronger real estate markets in the state, continuing to attract buyers due to its quality of life, job opportunities, and proximity to tech hubs in the Research Triangle area.
Increased Supply: New construction, while still not keeping pace with demand, should gradually increase. Additionally, some homeowners who had previously held off on selling may list their properties later in 2025 as they adjust to market conditions.
Stable Interest Rates: Mortgage rates are expected to remain relatively stable through mid-2025. While they may fluctuate, the Fed's efforts to manage inflation will likely keep rates in the 6-7% range, which could maintain buyer caution but still keep the market active.
Buyer Adaptation: With prices rising and inventory still tight, many buyers may focus on more affordable housing options or explore suburbs that offer lower prices. The increasing trend of remote work could also drive interest in less expensive, more spacious areas outside Raleigh’s core.
In conclusion, Wake County's real estate market is expected to stay strong through 2025, but with potential slowing of price appreciation due to higher interest rates and limited housing inventory. Buyers will face challenges related to affordability and limited options, but those who are willing to act quickly and strategically can still find success in this dynamic market. As always, prospective buyers and sellers should work closely with real estate professionals to navigate the evolving landscape of the Wake County market effectively.
