Discovering Kitty Hawk
The Birthplace of Powered Flight
Nestled on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Kitty Hawk holds a special place in history as the site of the first successful powered flight. On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made aviation history when they took to the skies in their aircraft, the Flyer. This historic event forever changed the course of travel, technology, and human achievement. Today, Kitty Hawk is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, aviation fans, and those looking to experience the beauty and charm of the North Carolina coast.
The Wright brothers’ journey to Kitty Hawk was driven by their desire to conquer the challenge of powered flight. After years of experimentation with gliders, they chose the windswept sands of the Outer Banks, which offered the perfect conditions for their experiments: steady winds, wide open space, and isolation to conduct their work without distractions. Kitty Hawk’s remote location became the birthplace of modern aviation.
On that historic morning in December 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first successful flight of the Wright Flyer, which lasted a mere 12 seconds but traveled 120 feet. The second flight, piloted by Wilbur, covered 175 feet in 12 seconds. By the fourth flight of the day, the aircraft flew an impressive 852 feet in 59 seconds.
These flights, though brief, were revolutionary and paved the way for future advancements in air travel. The Wright brothers' success in Kitty Hawk marked the dawn of an entirely new era in transportation and technology.
![]() What to see and do in Kitty Hawk Today, Kitty Hawk is home to a variety of attractions and activities that allow visitors to relive this momentous achievement and explore the history of flight. Wright Brothers National MemorialThe Wright Brothers National Memorial is the heart of Kitty Hawk’s aviation history. Located on a hill that overlooks the site of the first flight, the memorial features a visitor center with interactive exhibits, a replica of the Wright brothers' hangar, and the famous First Flight Boulder marking the spot where the first flight took place. Visitors can also walk along the Path of the First Flight, which follows the route the Wright brothers’ aircraft took during their four historic flights. The memorial is not only a tribute to the Wright brothers but also an inspiring place for anyone interested in aviation, science, and human perseverance. The Wright Brothers' MonumentAtop a steep hill, you’ll find a striking monument dedicated to the Wright brothers' achievement. The 60-foot granite structure is shaped like a wing and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Standing at the monument, you can see the vast landscape the brothers worked with, including the sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean that provided the perfect conditions for their experiments. Wright Brothers Memorial Visitor CenterThe visitor center features fascinating exhibits about the Wright brothers' early aviation work, including full-scale replicas of their aircraft and the tools they used. There are also hands-on displays, films, and a detailed timeline of their efforts to develop controlled flight. The visitor center provides a deep dive into the history of aviation and the Wright brothers’ innovative spirit. | Explore the Outer BanksIn addition to its aviation history, Kitty Hawk offers a variety of activities that make it an excellent vacation destination. The Outer Banks is known for its pristine beaches, sand dunes, and stunning natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy outdoor activities like kiteboarding, fishing, and hiking in Jockey’s Ridge State Park, home to the tallest living sand dune system on the East Coast. Hang GlidingKitty Hawk is also famous for its hang gliding tradition. The Wright brothers’ pioneering flight was in many ways a precursor to the modern sport of hang gliding. Today, visitors can try hang gliding for themselves through Kitty Hawk Kites, which offers lessons and guided flights from the famous dunes in Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Kitty Hawk offers more than just a historical trip back in time—it’s a place of inspiration. The Wright brothers’ success in Kitty Hawk represents the triumph of human curiosity, determination, and ingenuity. Visiting this historical site not only allows you to walk in the footsteps of the pioneers of flight but also gives you the opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful and adventurous parts of North Carolina. Whether you’re an aviation aficionado, a history buff, or simply someone looking for an exciting and scenic getaway, Kitty Hawk is the perfect destination. The breathtaking views, the rich historical significance, and the chance to relive the first steps toward modern flight make this small town a must-visit spot on any traveler’s itinerary. ConclusionKitty Hawk, North Carolina, is a place where history soared. The first powered flight by the Wright brothers is one of the most monumental moments in human history, and visiting the place where it all began offers a unique glimpse into the future of flight. Whether you’re exploring the Wright Brothers National Memorial, relaxing on the Outer Banks, or experiencing the thrill of hang gliding, Kitty Hawk is a destination that will inspire and delight visitors of all ages. |

What’s Happening in Wake County?
New Constitutional Carry Law Passed
As of March 20, 2025, North Carolina has passed a "constitutional carry" law, allowing residents aged 18 and older to carry concealed handguns without a permit. This makes North Carolina one of 29 states with similar laws.
Here are the key points of the new law:
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who live in North Carolina, are at least 18 years old, and are not prohibited by law from owning firearms, can now carry concealed handguns without needing a permit.
Training Requirements: The previous rule requiring a minimum of eight hours of training for a concealed carry permit has been removed.
Reciprocity: Although permits are no longer required for concealed carry within the state, North Carolina will continue to issue permits for residents who wish to carry in other states that recognize North Carolina’s permits.
The bill, known as the "Freedom to Carry NC" bill, passed the North Carolina Senate with a 26-18 vote along party lines and is now in the House of Representatives for consideration.
Additional Notes:
Open Carry: North Carolina already permits the open carry of firearms without a permit for those 18 and older.
Concerns from Law Enforcement: Some law enforcement officials have raised concerns that the removal of permit and training requirements may complicate interactions between officers and the public.
This new law marks a significant change in North Carolina's gun laws, so it’s important to stay updated on the specifics and any further legislative developments.

PORCH Wake Forest: Fighting Hunger
Strengthening Community
In the heart of Wake Forest, North Carolina, a grassroots hunger relief organization is making a significant impact in the fight against food insecurity. PORCH Wake Forest, part of the broader PORCH Communities network, is dedicated to ensuring that local families have access to nutritious food. Through community-driven efforts, PORCH Wake Forest has become a vital lifeline for those in need.
PORCH Wake Forest operates with a simple yet powerful model: neighbors helping neighbors. The organization collects and distributes non-perishable food items to local food pantries and directly to families in need. By mobilizing volunteers and engaging the community, PORCH Wake Forest provides a sustainable solution to food insecurity in the area.
The organization relies on a network of volunteers who coordinate food drives, collect donations, and distribute supplies. The process typically follows three key steps:
Monthly Food Collections – Residents leave non-perishable food donations on their porches, which volunteers collect and bring to a central location.
Sorting and Distribution – The donations are sorted and prepared for distribution to local food pantries and partner organizations.
Direct Assistance – Many donations go directly to families in need, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals.
This low-cost, high-impact model ensures that food reaches those who need it most while fostering a strong sense of community involvement.
Food insecurity is a growing concern in Wake Forest and across North Carolina. Rising costs of living, economic instability, and unforeseen emergencies leave many families struggling to put food on the table. Organizations like PORCH Wake Forest play a crucial role in addressing these challenges by providing reliable food support to vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, and low-income families.
PORCH Wake Forest thrives on community participation. Here’s how you can help:
Donate Food – Non-perishable items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and peanut butter are always in demand.
Volunteer – Help collect, sort, and distribute food donations.
Host a Collection Drive – Engage your neighborhood, workplace, or school in organizing a food drive.
Make a Financial Contribution – Monetary donations help fund food purchases and operational costs.
PORCH Wake Forest is more than a food distribution organization—it’s a movement of people committed to making a difference. By leveraging the power of local giving, the organization continues to grow, ensuring that no family in Wake Forest goes hungry.
To learn more, donate, or volunteer, visit PORCH Wake Forest’s website or follow them on social media. Together, we can build a stronger, more food-secure community.
