The "Gibraltar of the South" and the Monster Cannon

The Graveyard of the Atlantic – The waters off the Outer Banks are known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the thousands of shipwrecks that have occurred there over the centuries. Dangerous currents, shifting sandbars, and storms have made it one of the most treacherous coastal areas for sailors. One of the most famous wrecks is the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the flagship of the pirate Blackbeard, which ran aground near Beaufort in 1718!

Despite its impressive firepower, Fort Fisher eventually fell to Union forces in January 1865, sealing off the South's last supply line through the sea. Today, visitors can explore the fort's remains and learn about its history!

Exploring the Graveyard of the Atlantic

North Carolina’s Mysterious and Historic Waters

The North Carolina coast is home to one of the most treacherous and fascinating maritime regions in the world—the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Stretching from the Outer Banks to the waters off Cape Hatteras, this area has claimed thousands of ships over the centuries, earning its eerie yet captivating name. If you love history, shipwrecks, and coastal adventures, this destination is a must-visit.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic is notorious for its shifting sandbars, strong currents, and unpredictable storms, which have doomed countless vessels since the first European explorers arrived. Some of the most famous shipwrecks include:

  • Queen Anne’s Revenge (1718) – The flagship of the infamous pirate Blackbeard, which ran aground near Beaufort.

  • USS Monitor (1862) – The Civil War ironclad sank in a storm off Cape Hatteras.

  • Carroll A. Deering (1921) – A ghost ship found abandoned with no trace of its crew, sparking maritime mystery theories.

During World War II, German U-boats patrolled these waters, sinking numerous Allied merchant ships, further adding to the region’s eerie reputation.

Street Hockey in Apex

A Thrilling New Community Sport

Apex, North Carolina, a town known for its welcoming atmosphere and active lifestyle, is quickly becoming a hotspot for street hockey. This exciting sport, popular in colder climates, is gaining traction here as families and friends take to the streets to enjoy the fun, fast-paced game.

Street hockey, a variation of ice hockey played on pavement, is rapidly becoming a favorite pastime for locals in Apex. It’s easy to see why—the game is simple to set up and doesn’t require much specialized equipment, making it perfect for a town that loves outdoor activities. All you need is a ball, a stick, and a smooth surface, which is easy to find in Apex’s many parks and streets.

As more families look for affordable and active ways to spend their weekends, street hockey is providing a perfect opportunity for people of all ages to stay active and have fun together. The game is not only a great form of exercise but also fosters a strong sense of community, as neighbors come together for friendly competitions.

Apex offers several ideal locations to enjoy street hockey, including:

  • Hunter Street Park: Known for its spacious paved courts, it’s a popular spot for informal games and friendly competitions.

  • Apex Community Park: This park features a large paved area where residents often organize games and events.

  • Local Parking Lots & Greenway Trails: Some neighborhoods have taken advantage of empty parking lots or open spaces to create temporary hockey rinks for casual play.

As the sport grows, there are discussions in the community about creating dedicated spaces for street hockey, such as specialized courts or rinks, to further support the growing interest.

Street hockey in Apex officially kicks off this spring, with the warmer weather and longer days providing the perfect conditions for outdoor play. Local parks and public spaces will see an increase in street hockey activity, with more informal pickup games happening throughout the week.

The Apex Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department is also exploring the possibility of introducing organized leagues for both kids and adults. This means that starting this spring, residents may have the chance to sign up for regular games, tournaments, and even learn the basics of the sport through recreational programs.

The excitement around street hockey is evident in Apex, with both residents and businesses showing their support. Local sports retailers have started stocking street hockey equipment, from sticks to protective gear, making it easier for newcomers to jump in. The community is embracing the sport with open arms, and local organizations are working to expand opportunities for all ages to get involved.

“We’re really seeing street hockey catch on,” says Mike Taylor, Program Director for Apex Parks and Recreation. “It’s such a great way to stay active and engage with your neighbors. We’re excited to offer more opportunities for people to try it out and even participate in organized events later this year.”

If you’re interested in joining the street hockey movement in Apex, here’s how to get started:

  • Find a Pickup Game: Look for informal games happening at local parks or on social media groups where residents organize matches.

  • Sign Up for Leagues or Events: Keep an eye on Apex Parks and Recreation for announcements on organized leagues and tournaments, starting this spring.

  • Volunteer as a Coach or Organizer: Whether you’re an experienced player or just looking to help, volunteers are always welcome to support the growing community of street hockey players.

Street hockey in Apex is not just about playing a sport; it’s about coming together as a community. With the season starting this spring, now is the perfect time to grab a stick, find a ball, and join the fun!

Starlink and Apple

A Partnership That Could Change Connectivity

In an exciting development for tech enthusiasts, Starlink and Apple are working together to revolutionize how we stay connected, particularly in remote and underserved areas. This partnership could significantly impact how users experience connectivity, especially in places where traditional broadband and mobile networks have struggled to reach.

Starlink, a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, is designed to offer high-speed internet access via a network of low-orbit satellites. Starlink aims to provide reliable, fast internet service even in the most remote locations where traditional internet infrastructure like fiber or cables might be unavailable. Currently, Starlink is available in many regions around the world, providing internet access in areas where it was once difficult or impossible to connect.

Apple has always been at the forefront of innovation, and its partnership with Starlink is no exception. Recently, Apple introduced Satellite Connectivity in its latest iPhone models, with iPhone 14 and newer devices now offering the ability to send emergency messages via satellite when there’s no cellular signal. This was made possible through the Starlink satellite network.

This move marks a significant leap forward for mobile technology, as it brings satellite connectivity to the palm of your hand. While initially aimed at emergency situations, this could evolve into a broader solution for providing reliable communication in rural or off-grid areas.

Through Starlink’s global satellite network and Apple’s cutting-edge technology, iPhones are able to connect to satellites directly. When a user is outside of regular mobile network coverage, the phone can use Starlink’s satellites to send texts, including emergency messages, location data, and potentially even access the internet in the future.

The collaboration enhances Apple’s ability to offer continuous connectivity, no matter where users are, whether on a hiking trail, in a rural community, or traveling in remote locations.

The partnership between Starlink and Apple marks a potential game-changer for internet access and communication. Here’s what we can expect:

  1. Expanded Connectivity: Over time, this partnership could lead to even broader access to high-speed internet in underserved and rural areas where traditional infrastructure is unavailable. Apple users could soon experience uninterrupted access to streaming, messaging, and web browsing from almost anywhere.

  2. Global Communication: With Starlink covering the globe, iPhone users could enjoy reliable communication, not only during emergencies but also for everyday use. Imagine video calls, social media browsing, and online games—all possible in areas without traditional mobile towers.

  3. New Features and Applications: As the technology improves, Apple may expand its offerings, allowing users to access even more services through satellite connectivity, potentially transforming how we work and communicate while traveling or living in remote areas.

The collaboration between Apple and Starlink is just the beginning. As Starlink continues to expand its network, the integration of satellite technology into smartphones could become the standard, bridging the digital divide and bringing connectivity to people worldwide.

While Starlink's service is still evolving, its impact on the future of communication is undeniable. Together with Apple’s innovation, this partnership could reshape how people experience connectivity in a more connected, satellite-powered world.

For now, Apple users can look forward to reliable emergency communication via satellite, with the promise of even more groundbreaking features on the horizon.
