Exploring Mount Mitchell
The Crown Jewel of the Appalachian Mountains
Rising majestically to an elevation of 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell holds the distinction of being the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Nestled within North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest, this awe-inspiring summit is a beacon for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and history buffs alike. With its breathtaking vistas, diverse ecosystems, and storied past, Mount Mitchell is a destination that captivates visitors year-round.
Mount Mitchell is named after Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a scientist and professor at the University of North Carolina, who dedicated his studies to verifying the mountain’s height in the mid-19th century. Tragically, during a survey expedition in 1857, he fell to his death near what is now known as Mitchell Falls. His legacy lives on, as his final resting place is at the summit of the mountain he so passionately explored.
In 1915, Mount Mitchell became North Carolina’s first state park, preserving its rugged beauty for future generations. Since then, it has drawn visitors eager to experience its rich history and unparalleled scenery.

Wake County, NC Real Estate Outlook for 2030
Wake County’s real estate market is expected to undergo significant changes by 2030 due to rapid population growth, increasing housing demand, and affordability challenges. As one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing regions, the county faces a critical need for more housing options to accommodate its expanding population.
Recent projections indicate a housing shortfall of over 110,000 homes by 2029, which could drive up property values due to high demand and limited supply. Wake County’s PLANWake Comprehensive Plan estimates the need for 125,000 to 175,000 additional housing units within the next 10 to 15 years to keep up with population growth and changing demographics.
With Wake County’s population steadily rising, housing demand is expected to continue outpacing supply, putting pressure on home prices and rental costs. Areas like Raleigh and Wake Forest are projected to see substantial price increases, with forecasts suggesting that by 2030, the average home price in Raleigh could reach $430,486, while Wake Forest homes could average $441,286—a potential increase of up to 19.57% over five years.
To combat the growing affordability crisis, Wake County has introduced its 2025–2030 Consolidated Plan, which focuses on expanding access to affordable housing, addressing homelessness, and supporting community development. These initiatives aim to create more sustainable housing solutions and prevent displacement among low-income residents.
As the market continues to heat up, investors, homebuyers, and policymakers will need to navigate a landscape shaped by increasing property values, competitive demand, and affordability concerns. The county’s response to these challenges will play a crucial role in shaping the real estate market over the next decade.

North Carolina Senate Majority Leader Paul Newton Resigns
Paul Newton, the North Carolina Senate Majority Leader, has announced his resignation, stepping away from state government to explore new opportunities. A Republican from Cabarrus County, Newton has served in the Senate since 2017 and was elected Majority Leader in 2022. Before his political career, he held a leadership role as a former state president of Duke Energy.
His resignation, which takes effect Wednesday evening, leaves a vacancy in both the 34th Senate District and the Senate Majority Leader position. The process to fill these roles is expected to unfold in the coming weeks as state lawmakers determine the next steps.
Governor Stein Proposes Freezing Tax Cuts and
Phasing Out School Vouchers
Governor Josh Stein has unveiled his first two-year state budget proposal, aiming to halt planned tax cuts and gradually eliminate school vouchers for families of all income levels. His $33.65 billion plan prioritizes teacher pay raises, expanded funding for child care, and increased support for affordable housing. Additionally, the proposal includes tax relief for lower- and middle-income households.
However, the plan is expected to face strong opposition from Republican lawmakers, who control the legislature and have supported both tax reductions and school voucher programs. The upcoming budget negotiations will determine whether Stein’s proposals gain traction or face significant revisions.
Duke Health Plans New Hospital in
Garner to Enhance Medical Services
Duke Health has announced plans to construct a new hospital in Garner, NC, as part of its ongoing effort to expand medical services in the area. The new facility will help meet the growing demand for healthcare in the Wake County region, providing residents with easier access to a variety of medical treatments and specialized care.
Scheduled to open in the coming years, the hospital will feature state-of-the-art technology, a wide range of healthcare services, and a team of experienced medical professionals. This expansion is expected to alleviate pressure on existing hospitals and provide more convenient options for those living in Garner and the surrounding communities.
The project is part of Duke Health’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and accessibility across North Carolina. With population growth in Wake County, the new hospital will play a vital role in enhancing the overall health and well-being of local residents.
Additional Developments in Healthcare Infrastructure in Wake County
Novant Health has proposed the creation of the Novant Health Knightdale Medical Center, a $287 million project designed to enhance healthcare access in the area. The center will feature 36 licensed acute care beds, 12 observation beds, and one operating room, all aimed at addressing the rising healthcare demands in eastern Wake County.
WakeMed Health & Hospitals has revealed plans for a 150-bed mental health facility in Knightdale, with an estimated cost of $142 million. Initially planned for a 34-acre site within Knightdale, the location has raised concerns among local officials, prompting WakeMed to explore alternative sites for the project.
Although not directly in Knightdale, UNC Health has filed plans for a $462.1 million, 50-bed community hospital in nearby Wake Forest, northeast of Raleigh. This new facility aims to expand healthcare access and improve medical care in the fast-growing region, which is expected to have a positive impact on healthcare services in surrounding areas, including Knightdale.
North Carolina’s Furniture Industry
North Carolina has long been known as the heart of America’s furniture manufacturing industry, with a legacy built on craftsmanship and innovation. However, in recent years, the industry has experienced major shifts, with some long-standing companies shutting down while new players, including a Canadian manufacturer, are moving in.
In 2023, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, a well-known luxury furniture brand, abruptly ceased operations after 34 years, citing financial difficulties. This unexpected closure left hundreds of employees jobless and raised concerns about the future of domestic furniture manufacturing. Similarly, in early 2025, a Lexington-based wood components manufacturer announced it would be shutting down, leading to additional layoffs in the state.
While some companies are leaving, others see North Carolina as a strategic location for growth. One such company is Prepac Manufacturing Ltd., a Canadian furniture producer specializing in ready-to-assemble pieces. In March 2025, Prepac announced it was shutting down its manufacturing operations in Delta, British Columbia, and shifting all production to its Greensboro-area facility. This move resulted in over 170 job losses in Canada but strengthened the company’s presence in North Carolina.
The decision to relocate was influenced by a variety of factors, including trade policies, tariffs, and logistical advantages. By consolidating operations in the U.S., Prepac aims to streamline production, reduce costs, and better serve the North American market.
These developments highlight the changing landscape of furniture manufacturing in North Carolina. While the state has faced losses in recent years, it continues to attract new investments and remains a key hub for the industry’s future.
